It's not often that I see the Mediterranean Diet mentioned on the forums though the myth is that it's the healthiest diet in the world. So when I unearthed 'Delicious Dishes for Diabetics: A Mediterranean Way of Eating' today, I decided to write a review.
Robin Ellis learned to cook from his mother Molly, a Type 1 who died at 67 years old. In 1999, despite not being overweight or having symptoms, Robin was diagnosed Type 2 and moved to SW France with his wife Meredith and embraced the Mediterranean way of eating. Robin Ellis is an actor, best known for playing 'Ross Poldark' in the first dramatisation of 'Poldark'. The book is comprised of some original recipes and some tweaked from recipes by more famous cooks. Publisher Carmen Cahill and actors Sir Derek Jacobi, Lindsay Duncan, Tim Pigott-Smith, Eva Marie Saint, Brian Cox, Louise Fletcher and Imelda Staunton all rave about his cooking.
Recipes are mostly Mediterranean in style, some are higher carb than others. They include things like Swiss chard, white bean and pasta soup, roast ratatouille, fennel salad with Parmesan shavings, chicken breasts with capers and lemony sauce, guinea fowl with Pancetta and fennel, pot roast pork with dried mushroom and juniper berries, gratin of fried chickpeas with Chorizo and spinach, baked mackerel fillets, red peppers stuffed with tomato and Chevre and courgette fritters. Hearty rustic food, with a vegetarian section but probably not suitable for really low carbers.
'Delicious Dishes for Diabetics' was gifted to me by my mother and I have no idea where she bought it. It was published by Constable and Robinson under their Right Way imprint in 2011 as a paperback priced 6.99. ISBN 9780716022664 and it was distributed in the USA also.
As a cookbook I'd give it 5/5 but as a cookbook for people with diabetes 2/5. I may be too harsh however, as Robin Ellis managed the first six years on diet and exercise only, eating this food.
