Dentist visits

Now the dentists are getting in on the act of diagnosing diabetes. My husband went to the dentist today and had a bg test. As it was an early appointment he didn't have any breakfast before he went so his bg was 6.5 He's been given an appointment to go back next week to make sure, but was told his fasting level should be round about 2.5! I've never heard of such a low fasting level and assumed the "norm" would be between 4 & 6.5 Who is right me or the dentist?

Was your husband invited to take part in a study? There was one conducted in America by Dentists and some bright spark may have decided to do one here without telling anyone . Whoever told the Dentist that 2.5 would be an OK reading needs to be told what a ridiculous figure this is. I would ask the Dentist where he got his information from and why he is testing his patients.

OMG can you not report this to your local PHC or gp just so they are aware that this is going on.

We have a private dentist (NHS practically non existant round here) and they have started doing a blood test as routine part of treatment. Because it was an early appointment he didn't have breakfast so it was in effect a fasting test. I don't know what type of meter they used. Lo and behold about 5pm he gets a call from the dentist to say it wasn't 6.5 it was actually 10 and they would write to his GP (get my hair and nails done? I wouldn't trust them with an emery board let alone scissors xx). So I'm on to the GP surgery and after a long conversation about why they shouldn't wait for the GP letter because of the delay, I finally got him an appointment with the diabetic nurse and he's going to get a proper blood test on Monday. Just my luck that it comes back ok and he can carry on with his chocolate biscuits - grrrrr.

I suppose in one way we should be grateful they did the test because he only goes to the doctor if he's half dead (like most men I suspect) so it may have picked something up on the other hand they need to get their facts right so I will be going in myself on Monday (what a treat, the dentist on my birthday - he'd better give me a good pressie for being a brave girl) and letting them know that they at least have got the low level wrong.

As suspected, hubby has got his "proper" blood test results and the surgery says they are normal level so I suppose I will just have to keep buying him is chocolate biscuits. I'm trying to be pleased for him as it's no fun having to watch what we eat and when, but it's just NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!! (sob, sob)
