Desmond course update.

Had part 2 of my course today.

Last week I told you that surprisingly the sister running the course gave everybody a testing meter. I said the cynic in me thought they were provided by a pharmaceutical rep and people would have to pay for their own strips. So today one of the participants asked for some more strips, the reply came "you will need to ask your surgery for those" and the person said they already had without any luck.

One thing I have learned is that this site is an invaluable tool for self education and we learn from each other. However, having been here for a number of weeks now made the Desmond sessions seem too basic for me. The level of understanding of the majority of participants is low but at least they are there being given the basics, which is better than nothing.

Perhaps they should consider running an advanced course for those wishing to advance their knowledge, or maybe just direct people to this site;)

I did feel like the class show off at mine on Monday as I knew all of the answers! I found some of it informative but largely it was pushing the carbs( albeit controlled portions) , low fat and no testing route. A few times the dietician said " but D is a special case" as I'd explained I was low carbing. Suppose as most just wanted to be told they could go on mainly as before , that was inevitable. The sad thing is they kept pushing how controlling the BG levels though exercise and diet was paramount to avoiding complications yet nothing they said about diet was really going to address that. I am sure the take home message most got was carbs with every meal only in smaller portions, low fat everything and eat fruit if you need a snack.

Don't think that will happen Jim, It would just highlight the lack of knowledge amongst HCPs.
 
I never did the Desmond course but I found X-PERT really good now I am waiting to go in the DAFNE course. And before anyone else says it yes I mean DAFNE and it's not just for type 1
