I went on a Desmond day when I was diagnosed last summer and wasted nearly 4 months trying to get my sugar down following their advice; cut fat off meat, no cooking oil, butter, cream etc. Lower carbs and low GI foods. Well, I can't seem to tolerate carbs at all and since going on the LCHF regime (or virtually no carbs!) I have got much better control of my glucose (still not perfect) and lost 1 and a half stones although I didn't need to lose weight and am really too thin now but I have now stabilised at 7 stone and don't seem to be losing any more. I would love to do the Slimfast diet to try to reverse my diabetes but am a bit worried as I am so thin already. Has anyone else who is quite thin done it and was it OK or did you lose a lot of weight and become skeletal????
At diagnosis BS 18.6mmol/L, HbA1c 10.4; I was gobsmacked as I was totally asymptomatic, only went for my free NHS health check. The diabetic nurse was amazed that I had not had any symptoms.. At six months my HbA1c was 6.4 but for the first few months I was struggling with the recommended very low fat/ high GI carbs (which is what I was eating anyway as I had bran flakes, seeded granary brread (although I don't eat a lot of bread), semi skimmed milk etc.).Hi AH
7 stone is really light so somewhere (in my tiny little mind) I see something of a disconnect between a weight loss program as opposed to your BS.
What are your figures?
Mike
Hi Mike, just had thyroid function done. I feel fine and was 8 and a half stone before I changed my diet, about the right weight for me. I was tubby as a child (rest of the family like stick insects!) and when I was 14 I went to Singapore with my family (Dad in RAF) and loved the sun and sport, lost my puppy fat and swore then that I would never get overweight again as I loved the slimmer me. I didn't weight watch/diet but when my clothes got tighter I just cut out the goodies until I was back where I wanted to be which was around 8 and a half stone. That has worked for me all this time so I don't really think there is any other underlying problem. It would just be nice to get the evening BS down to be able to eat something else occasionally. That just weirds me out ABDiet sounds great, but the overall weight bothers me a bit. Has it always been near or close to those levels?
Something else going on .... been tested for anything else?
Maybe someone else has some clues 'cos I sure don't
