Im trying to find threads on Desmond course on here i dunno if one has been created before.I'm going to a Desmond course 3 weeks today. Its listed as running from 9am to 4pm with time off for Lunch.Seems a long time.Ive read bits and bats about it on the Desmond Locala facebook page.I guess i shall find out for myself what its like.I was wondering if it would be a good idea to keep a note of what im eating a week or so before i go and then id have something to enquire about food wise. :)

I went on a Desmond day when I was diagnosed last summer and wasted nearly 4 months trying to get my sugar down following their advice; cut fat off meat, no cooking oil, butter, cream etc. Lower carbs and low GI foods. Well, I can't seem to tolerate carbs at all and since going on the LCHF regime (or virtually no carbs!) I have got much better control of my glucose (still not perfect) and lost 1 and a half stones although I didn't need to lose weight and am really too thin now but I have now stabilised at 7 stone and don't seem to be losing any more. I would love to do the Slimfast diet to try to reverse my diabetes but am a bit worried as I am so thin already. Has anyone else who is quite thin done it and was it OK or did you lose a lot of weight and become skeletal????

I already cut the fat off bacon before i microwave it have never really liked a lot of fat on bacon. As for meat well we try to buy meat that has none or very little fat on it.As for cooking oil well i thought that was ok to use it for frying stuff. My breakfast on a Saturday morning is cooked in oil at the cafe where we go.

Arab Horse id be careful if i was you seeing as you say you are already so thin.Slimfast diet may not be suitable for you.7 stone is very slim indeed.Good luck with whatever method you choose :)

Hi AH :)

7 stone is really light so somewhere (in my tiny little mind) I see something of a disconnect between a weight loss program as opposed to your BS.

What are your figures?

Mike

Thank you, Johnboy.

At diagnosis BS 18.6mmol/L, HbA1c 10.4; I was gobsmacked as I was totally asymptomatic, only went for my free NHS health check. The diabetic nurse was amazed that I had not had any symptoms.. At six months my HbA1c was 6.4 but for the first few months I was struggling with the recommended very low fat/ high GI carbs (which is what I was eating anyway as I had bran flakes, seeded granary brread (although I don't eat a lot of bread), semi skimmed milk etc.).

Hi Mike, agree with you,

I seem to be OK in the mornings as I now have my breakfast when I get up rather than after I have seen to my horses as that works better; I checked both ways and doing the horses before breakfast caused a BS rise of 0.8 - 1.8mmol/L by the time I came in and ate. For breakfast I have two egg omlette with mushrooms, onion, tomato, cheese and garlic or any combination of these (keeps Dracula from the door) for breakfast and for lunch I usually have a large salad with some meat, mostly chicken. In the evening I have a stir fry and for some reason my 2 hour post seems to be high even though I don't have anything which should elevate my glucose. I am not sure if it is because I usually watch telly after that meal whereas with breakfast and lunch I am active afterwards. By then (usually about 8.00pm )I really don't feel like any more activity!

That is why, like you, I thought that my problem is fatty liver/pancreas so may need something like the ND to get rid of the internal fat and get my evening bloods better plus actually be able to occasionally eat something else. About the only thing I haven't changed is my coffee; always had it strong and black so I now just have less of it than I used and substitute a fruit/green tea (yeuk, hate it) half of the time.

I will let you know what happens re the ND; watch this space!

That just weirds me out AB :) Diet sounds great, but the overall weight bothers me a bit. Has it always been near or close to those levels?

Something else going on .... been tested for anything else?

Maybe someone else has some clues 'cos I sure don't :)

Hi Mike, just had thyroid function done. I feel fine and was 8 and a half stone before I changed my diet, about the right weight for me. I was tubby as a child (rest of the family like stick insects!) and when I was 14 I went to Singapore with my family (Dad in RAF) and loved the sun and sport, lost my puppy fat and swore then that I would never get overweight again as I loved the slimmer me. I didn't weight watch/diet but when my clothes got tighter I just cut out the goodies until I was back where I wanted to be which was around 8 and a half stone. That has worked for me all this time so I don't really think there is any other underlying problem. It would just be nice to get the evening BS down to be able to eat something else occasionally.
