Hi all,

Whoopee....have been offered a place on the DESMOND course in 2 weeks time. Any good????? Are they going to push carbs, carbs and more carbs at me? No one to go with me and don't know what to expect.

Chrissie

You are lucky
My PCT doesn't offer it.
Even if they try to push carbs, you don't need to have them

Hi Hanadr
Yeah I do have to admit I was diagnosed in May this yr and I have had lots of checks, retinal screening, dietician, chiropodist and this in what I think is breakneck speed.... Am still confused by the forums on here pro and anti carbs!! Anyway, going with an open mind, at least I have the option to go which by the sounds of it is dependent on where you live.

Regards Chrissie

Hi there,

Iv just completed a Desmond course 2 weeks ago, and for me i would say it has saved my life. I know this sounds very dramatic but for me i needed that jolt, it wont be for everyone but since being diagnosed 3 months ago i was not taking it seriously and continuing to live my life with gay abandon.

The course covers many aspects of the subject, teaches you how to understand how your body processes sugar/ glucose what medication is available and how diabetes can affect your body. The group was honest and sometimes frightening undrestanding the over all picture and heart disease. It was not all doom and gloom but very informative. There is quite a lot of food awarness which is very interesting and i picked up many facts i was not aware of.
She said the dury was out re carbs as the concern was that if folks cut out carbs they are generally eating more of other stuff like protien and fats which may have other adverse affects on the body so they advocate just eating a healthy diet including all food groups.

All in all it really raised my awarness and made me re access how i was dealing with diabetes and since i have totally gave up sugar and salt and i was a true salt fiend. Now i am adapting my diet and for the first time in my life i feel in control and motivated this is something i need to do if i want to keep some quality of life for the future with my children.

Hi Scottydog
Thanks for that. I know what you mean although I was doing really well but this last two weeks (since i have been signed off work with stress!) my eating has been truly out of control again. My cravings are awful and I just seem to feel hungry ALL THE TIME. I am a carboholic its true but it doesn't seem to matter what I eat Ia can't stop snacking.

I need a good kick up the backside, perhaps the course will help, I am feeling angry I have this condition and I suppose its a bit of a letting go process.

I have a bit of a fatalistic attitude to life having lost my 23 yr old son 4 years ago suddenly and unexpectedly, but I still have my husband and daughter to live for and I need to sort my head out or I know I will start to get complications (everyting so far is good)

Thanks for the support, and no, saying it saved yr life is not over the top if it made you sit up and think. :)
