Have just taken a phone call from the Desmond Locala service. They have a slot for me to attend on 26th February 2015 9am to 4pm be nice to meet people in the same boat.I feel ive let things slip diet wise this last couple of months or so what with the hastle of Christmas and all that.I know i need to get back on track now otherwise my next Hba1c may be higher than it was when it was checked in October 2014.If it goes over 7 i reckon the DN would put me on tabs.

Has anyone here been to a Desmond meeting ?

Please let us know how you went on and what you thought please as I am still waiting for a placement myself.

i,ve been on the desmond course and to be honest, it was a waste of time
i had/got more help and advice from members here

I haven't been on the course but have read many threads on the forum about it. I believe some of the information is useful, but you need to shut your ears to the dietary advice, which is the usual NHS Eatwell Plate stuff (starchy carbs and low fat).

What do you mean shut your ears to the dietary advice ?

I went on the DESMOND course last fall. Some of it was interesting but in regards to the dietary advice, bleh. As Bluetit said, they focus on the NHS' "Eatwell Plate", and are of the mindset that we must eat carbs with every meal. For someone who isn't on this forum and has done zero research on their own, I guess the course would be helpful because it does of course tell people to cut down on sweets and sugars, but like Ally, I thought it was a bit of a waste of time.

So I can look forward to going to this then:rolleyes: Should I take my tablet with me, as I can get Netflix on that?:D:D

I went on one and took my own snacks -- they only had chocolate biscuits and custard creams in the break. It was really to tell people to eat a bit less of all the stuff they were eating already, particularly rice and pasta. Most of the questions at the end were from men who wanted to know how they could carry on drinking the same amount of alcohol. No one asked anything about their diabetes.
I should go and see what you can pick up about the mechanics of diabetes. There were (and still are) lots of things I didn't/don't know.

I went to one about 4 years ago and judging by various post on the forums it's not changed much. Basically they will tell you to eat starchy carbs with every meal and a carby snack mid morning and mid afternoon such as a couple of rich tea biscuits. You will already be aware from this site that the beast way to keep your bs under control is to reduce carbs, but don't tell them that they will probably lock you up and throw away the key. ;)

I miss rich tea biscuits to dunk in my tea.... unfortunately they definitely dont help to lower the BS :(

Because it will let you believe you can eat anything you like, and you can't. You know you can't ... you have been on the forum long enough to know that. ;)

Yeah i know what you mean.I have been given a rough guide of what i can cant eat etc its also trial and error that much i already know.Ill still go along and if i think its going nowhere i can always excuse myself.

Brown bread (wholemeal that is) is better for your general health than white, but contains just the same amount of carbs and converts to glucose just the same as white. Please test it, and be careful how much you eat.

It's pointless and childish I thought. I knew so much more than the woman running it

I went on shortly after I was diagnosed a few years ago and when I told them my HaB1c level they said I was pre diabetic and should not be on the course and sent me away at lunchtime! So only got part of it which was all about what diabetes was, apparently the diet part was in afternoon!
Went back to my GP who had said I was diabetic and she told me I was and they did not know what the current guidelines were so she would contact them and arrange for me to attend the afternoon but never heard anything more!
