hi all - i have just joined as i have been reading some very helpful posts - i would be very grateful if anyone can help - i have tried to get to grips with metformin and gliclazide but suffer from the usual side effects - when i asked for help i was told to persevere to see if my stomach would get used to it - but - yesterday i was at work and spent half the afternoon sitting on the toilet with a bucket in case i was sick - i couldnt eat as i had nausea on and off all day - i went home which is 1 and half hours drive and just went to bed - it is now morning and i feel so much better - all i had was a bowl of bran and at 12pm my bs is 9.8 - theres no way i can take the tablets any more - dn says alternative is insulin injections - but i just read that metformin doesnt reduce sugar but helps liver - its all so confusing!! Dont find gp helpful !

Hi, Welcome :)

Firstly are you taking the SR version of metformin? that is kinda to the tummy, secondly bran is full of carbohydrates which is effectively sugar, thats why you had a high reading, we as diabetics must reduce our carbohydrates to get good numbers, have a look at this

I understand where you are coming from, being prescribed Metformin was the last straw for me. Thankfully it was my wake up call to get a grip on my diet. I didn't take the Metformin, I know it isn't a decision everyone agrees with, but hey it is my body. And I can't see the point in taking meds that leave you feeling worse than you was to begin with. My advice is to look around the forum. Educate yourself as to what you should be eating. Ask questions, go to Youtube and research as much as possible.
This forum has been a lifeline for me ,people are so helpful.

Thank you so much Andy12345 i have a lot to learn - i assumed fibre was good = bran flakes! i obviously need to work out what is carbs and what i can eat - yes I was changed to the sr version of metformin which is giving me this grief - if i limit carbs where do i get energy from? I am always so tired!

thank you Opalshards for replying - i will do as you suggest - think i did this wrong!!!

i would actively encourage cream and butter, but you need to read about it from more clever people than me, take a look at the LCHF part of the forum

why not eat animal fat? fat doesnt make you fat, it you have other health conditions that dont agree with consuming fat, you should read up on it, i should be careful because i dont want to recomend something harmful, but low carb high fat diets are great and its an awesome way to control your blood glucose, so worth a look at

ive been reading about lchf diet this afternoon - makes sense and yes makes more sense than what ive been told by gp - i dont eat meat but i will love eating good fat such as avocado/olive oil and ????? cream and butter - im going to try and turn this round thank you x
