HiHow old is your son @Mummy_of_a_type1_ ?
I was 8 when diagnosed (30 years ago now!) and really don't remember any distress or upheaval about it, I know it was traumatic for my parents though. My mother passed out when they gave me my first injection as she was afraid of needles but she faced it for my sake and was jabbing me herself a day or 2 later. I'm sure your son will one day look back and see what an amazing job you are now doing.
It's natural to worry but try to reassure yourself how many of us have been through the same situation and survived just fine, and the knowledge and technology is getting better and better. There is possibly too much information in a way though as I'd imagine you're drowning at the moment! Don't be too hard on yourself to begin with and rest assured you will both learn as you go along.
I know how scary night hypos are, I tend to let myself go to bed at a slightly higher level to try to prevent them but obviously this isn't ideal. It might be worth doing short term though as you get your head around everything - speak to your hospital team though as they probably wouldn't be happy if you said "well this woman on the internet said"! ;-) The other thing to consider is @HypoBand UK
- if you search these forums you will find a few threads about it - it's designed to alert people to night time hypos. It's very new but has had good reviews. The downside is the price (£150ish) which is out of some peoples reach but if you are lucky enough to be able to afford one it could give you some peace of mind at night.
Best of luck with everything and remember there are plenty of people here for you, even in the middle of the night, as despite this being the 'diabetes UK' site there are plenty of people in different time-zones here!
He is being so brave!!Hi, I'm a newbie too, but it must be so scary when its your child that has the problem. I'm sure he'll be fine, kids seem to sail through changes that we would think are huge obstacles. Good luck to you bothx
He is being so brave!!
How are you coping with it all?
It must be hard being diagnosed later in life right?
I'm shattered, suffocating with all the information!
We have a good diabetic team and our nurse is great, which is lovely. X
Hi all
My son was diagnosed with type 1 just 3 weeks ago.
Thank god he is well and has taken it on amazingly!
However I haven't! I'm devastated.
I've a million questions and theories buzzing about in my head!
I can't sleep, am constantly checking on him during the night, scared of him having a hypo.
Advice, support and looking for new friends xx
Hi
Hope you are managing a little sleep now. My son was diagnosed with type 1 beginning of October, he's just turned 11. I know how you're feeling the whole diagnosis was very traumatic an I too wake up constantly through the night yo check on him. If u want yo chat please get back in touch.

Hi,
Hope your ok x
I have been where you have been, so glad you have found this forum.
Has your lad had a hypo yet?
If your going to check bloods through the night, break it down to midnight, 3am and then at 6am. This at least breaks it down, you need rest too. Also the results will help to see if he's on too much or not enough.
You are his pancreas at the moment and you are an amazing mother. Day by day he will grow stronger with the love you have provided.
