I think cost is the big thing. Libre came along in the UK and significantly undercut the dexcom. This is important for both people funding it themselves and for the NHS funding it.

Libre also got approval in the UK far earlier than in the US. I know they also have supply problems, so it's entirely possible they didn't work too hard in the US because the market in Europe was big enough for their manufacturing capacity.

No, libre doesn't have alarms built in, and this is a problem. The next version is supposed to. More recently addons have come along to give alarms when low/high - miaomiao and blucon both work well. I like my miaomiao a lot.

I self fund for me I can get Libre for around £100 per month, Dexcom looks like it would be £160.

The Dexcom subscription does allow alerts but you can get alerts for Libre with something like the maiomaio which is a 1 off cost rather than increasing the monthly cost.

I hear the Libre V2 will have alerts out of the box, but I have only heard rumours. It worries me that if they start adding alerts to the Libre it will get more expensive and or get larger or no longer be waterproof etc.

They've already said that it will cost the same as Libre 1 and uses the same housing. There's no reason it wouldn't be waterproof as that would damage their own market.

You still need to fingerprick in the UK because the driving authority doesn't recognise cgm results. Also, I would advise any libre user to do occasional checks with a glucose meter because the libre can become very inaccurate (either because of a bad sensor or because of user allergies). Even libre admit you shouldn't rely on it for very high or low readings (ie do a blood test before treating a hypo?)
