Dexcom G5

Hello!

I've been type 1 diabetic for 8 years, but have only just learnt about CGM.

Has anyone successfully secured funding (even partial funding) for CGM? Did you have to fight the NHS for it?

I'm considering self-funding a G4, but would it be more savvy to wait for the G5 to be released, assuming that I wouldn't have to pay £1,000 for the dexcom device. I wonder how much more expensive the sensors would be, though.

Any advice and information for a CGM newbie would be great.

(If it's of interest I don't use a pump.)

Just heard on another thread from @Diammatic that the G5 won't be compatible with the (NHS supplied free) Animas Vibe pump as a receiver. So you would have to wait for the G6, buy a £1K Dexcom receiver for the G5, or stick with the G4

This kind of makes me sad but also happy because I can use my phone.

Good point. As there is stuff all integration of data between the sensor and the pump functions, we might as well just use our phones!

Thanks for your replies, but I don't use a pump (nor do I intend to in the future). So with that in mind, should I wait for the G5 so that I don't have to pay for a receiver?

Thanks for remembering my posts @Spiker lol

To confirm these rumours, I sat down with an Animas rep a couple days back and asked them about the future with Dexcom and Animas. I was told that Dexcom will continue to make stand alone Dexcom devices, the next of which will be the G5 and it should be used with the Dexcom receiver only (not the Animas pumps) and possibly even other smart devices. The Rep said i would have wait until the G6 is released which will be the next upgrade to the Animas compatible system.

I think the reason for this is that Dexcom wants to retain costumers independent of the Animas users, so they naturally will be providing stand alone upgrades first, and lets face it - it would be crazy if they DIDN'T make a sensor that transmits directly to a smart phone lol.

EDIT - I was not given any timeline.

I would hope it happens quickly, as Medtronic seems like they are really moving along with the 640G and now the 670G systems already dated to be put in 2015 -2017. I haven't been able to find anything on what Animas has planned (which could be a while still as they will likely want to milk their Jan 2015 release in the USA and here in Canada for a while before announcing better devices)

Which is a shame, because IMO the Medtronic 640G systems looks better then the Vibe + Decom system :/ So Animas may loose a bunch of people when thats fully available.

up to you really, although cant understand why you wouldnt consider a pump.

As I understand it the G5 will send data directly to an iPhone so (if you have one) you won't need a receiver. This ability & presumably the new 505 (Artificial Pancreas based) software will be the only differences from the G4. Using the iPhone it can then be sent to the Apple Watch too.
Unfortunately I've seen no references to Android/Windows phones.

What's that I hear? Steve Jobs cackling maniacally from beyond the grave? Grr.

Yes the constant tedious fiddling, incessant fear and failures, and rattling around like a cyborg full of bloody holes is hard to beat. :-/
