Re: Diaberic nurses!

It depends on your BG reading before the walk and how brisk it is!

Do you have your nurses email address? I find emailing mine is easier and then she rings me back

Next time you get to speak ask if there is an email you can use

Make sure you have something sugary with you, dextrose or lucozade etc. if you feel low on your walk then test and treat as necessary.

I've been diagnosed for 9 weeks now and personally I walk my dog for an hour every day with no effects. But that's not a brisk walk, if it gets your heart rate up you may find a decrease in BG.

I'm no expert in this so I'm sure someone with better advice will be along!

Hi Jodi,

If your blood sugars are running a little low then try having a banana before you. If they are on the higher end of normal or above then you shouldn't need anything. Make sure you have some dextrose tablets or something with you in case you hypo. A 30 minute walk shouldn't do anything too drastic to your sugar levels but it's best to have something with you, just in case.

Thank you all ive tooken your advise and will take something sugary with me :) yeah it up and down hill!

You may have to decrease your insulin or eat extra carbs with your lunch before setting off, either way you best bet is to test your bg before and after you get to work to see what effect the exercise has, if you can stop 15-20 mins into the journey and test your bg and if its dropping eat a small snack or take some glucose on board if your hypo. Just remember exercise (depending on duration and activity) can effect bg for several hours after so keep testing your bg hourly until your confident what effect it has and how to adjust for it.

Keep ringing the clinic until you get through, when you do ask them which is the best way to contact them should you experience any difficulties in the future, in my own clinic the secretary will take a message if the DSN's are busy and they'll return the call sometime later in the day.
