Hi there!

Does anyone have experience (or has both) Diabetes and Alzheimers? Or has a family member who is affected by Alzheimers?

Would love to talk to you in regards to a project we're doing to raise awareness at Diabetes.co.uk

Please feel free to private message me or email me at [email protected]

Thank you again and I hope you are all having a lovely day.

I have read in the past that there is definitely a link between someone with diabetes and their increased risk of developing either Dementia or Altzheimers.
Research that I did some years ago revealed that the human brain actually has a number of 'Beta' cells within the Brain itself., not sufficient to keep diabetes under control throughout the body, but sufficient Insulin production to attempt to keep the brain functioning at all times, even when the primary beta cells within the pancreas fail as in (Type 1)
These days many treatments for both Dementia and Altzheimers disease are treated by our diabetic medications.
Hope this little information is of some help in your research - Good Luck. - Lazybones

Thank you for your kind reply. We're just so eager to raise awareness and to help people. Anyone who can step forward and share their story is welcome :)

A couple of years ago my father (then early 80s) seemed to be showing signs of Alzheimers.
Turns out it was brain fog due to raised blood glucose levels and the onset of age related T2.
Since then, when he controls his bg, his brain is sharp and his memory far better than the average octogenarian. When his bg is uncontrolled, all the symptoms are back with a vengeance.

I did a bit of reading, and found some interesting info.
- there has been a move to re-label Alzheimers T3 diabetes (of course this is a silly idea because various T3s already exist! how about D4?) on the premise that Alz and D are related. A google search for 'Alzheimers and T3' will bring up the debate.
- since then there is new evidence that poor diet (which usually involves a lot of cheap carbs) is as much to blame as high bg. I find this an interesting discussion:
http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/25/bittman-is-alzheimers-type-3-diabetes/?_r=0

I also found this study a fascinating read:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2769828/
this is an extract from the conclusion:
T2DM was deemed not sufficient to cause AD, although it could possibly serve as a cofactor in its pathogenesis or progression. Altogether, the data provide strong evidence that AD is intrinsically a neuroendocrine disease caused by selective impairments in insulin and IGF signaling mechanisms, including deficiencies in local insulin and IGF production. At the same time, it is essential to recognize that T2DM and T3DM are not solely the end results of insulin/IGF resistance and/or deficiency, because these syndromes are unequivocally accompanied by significant activation of inflammatory mediators, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and mitochondrial dysfunction, which contribute to the degenerative cascade by exacerbating insulin/ IGF resistance. Referring to AD as T3DM is justified, because the fundamental molecular and biochemical abnormalities overlap with T1DM and T2DM rather than mimic the effects of either one.

Hi there how are you!
Ihave been typeII since 2002 and diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2010. I was told by the Psychiatrist that assessed me at the time that I had some infarks deep within the white matter of the brain and the only treatment for me was to have better control of my diabetes and its complications. Is this the sort of thing your looking to help with?

@CaptainEarle, is this information still required? Have only just noticed this thread, which seems to have gone into 'hibernation mode'.
Bumping it up, as it seems a shame, as it would appear that diagvd2010 has not had a response.

I have cared for several relatives with dementias over the last 30 years. Would be happy to provide further insights should the OP be interested, but would only in PM.

Hi there! Thank you for replying to my thread. This may well be something we are looking for! Would you mind if I could pass on your details to our researcher? I believe he is writing a report to investigate further into the relationship between the two and I know he would love to talk to you if that's ok?

Hi there, our researcher is writing a report into the investigation of both and we would very much like to talk to you also about your experiences if this is ok?

Hi Colin! Do you mind inboxing me your email and phone number so I can pass it onto our researcher?

Hope you're having a nice Friday so far!

Hi Pipp! If you are happy for the researcher to contact you, could you possibly inbox me your email and phone number so I can pass onto our researcher?

I hope you're having a lovely Friday so far and are looking forward to the weekend! :)
