Diabetes and Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy. Just finished it.
Hi

I went for my third chemotherapy session yesterday but, after the blood test, the doctor said that my white blood cells where too low and that my blood sugar was too high and that I couldn't get the chemo.

I've know for quite a while that my sugar level was too high and I suspect that some of that at least is down to the chemotherapy.

I have an appointment with my diabetes doctor tomorrow but I was wondering if any board members have any experience with the effects of chemotherapy on sugar levels? Any comments/suggestions regarding what I should be discussing with the doctor?

I'm on 2000mg of Metformin per day.

Thanks

Mick

Hi Mick
Sorry to hear all is not well. Stress can make your sugars high and i would of thought with what your going through is stressing the body, as it must go into shock with the amount of chemo, so i'm not surprised your sugars are high.
Are you eating a normal diet or is your chemo making you feel sick. If you are using ensure drinks look at the amount of sugars in each carton as this may be another reason.
Hope all goes well

Thanks Tracey

Yes, I hadn't considered the stress side of things. With two young children I feel quite stressed.

I'm slipping off the diet quite a bit as I've lost about 10kgs since this started and I sometimes (not too often though) eat fatty things in an effort to put on some missing weight.

Vicious circle that I find myself in. Stressing, eating, chemo, weight loss, stressing...etc.

Only four more chemo sessions left.

All the best

Mick

While I was having Chemo I was extremely thirsty and put it down to the treatment I was having. I was drinking cranberry juice because I was told this was good to prevent thrush which is a common side effect of chemo but I still felt that I was drinking too much and asked the nurse if she could test blood sugar, my reading came out at 17.5, the doctor stopped the steroids that were given to prevent sickness and made an appointment to see my gp who I think went into a bit of a flap because I was having chemo. That was 3 years ago now and I have gone from taking no meds for anything to having to take gliclazide and metformin bendrofluazide and simvastatin. I am pretty sure that it was the chemo that started it all, but hopefully I have it under control now, I have been testing and have fasting levels between 4.9 and 5.8.
