Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi all, my daughter was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 13 and is due to turn 16 in June next year, she has applied for a college course and really wants to take up residency, this would be her first time on her own looking after herself and as a family we are worried about hoe she would cope but also do not want to let it control her, does anyone have any tips that has maybe done this themselves or had a child who has? thanks in advance

Hello ! I had type 1 by the time I was 11 but did not leave home until 19 to go to university. I also have a 16 year old daughter (not type 1) so I understand your concerns without the added anxiety of type 1.
That said, I would ask how she handles things now and what tech does she use? If she's motivated to prove her independence then hopefully she is already doing so now?
As a mum I would want to know how much supervision they'd get in 'residency' given she isn't yet an adult e.g. is there a meal provided and would she be sharing with older teens/adults. If she does decide she is struggling, would she be able to return home easily?
My experience was in the early 90s and went as far from home as I could get without leaving the country! I did get registered with a GP and diabetic consultant so the basics were taken care of. I was confident enough about my diabetes to let my new flatmates know so they could help me if needed.
I also ate badly, drank a little too much sometimes and felt proud of my independence. TBH I am fairly certain I could not have coped at 16 but at this point I had an eating disorder and I hope your daughter hasn't got any food related issues as these can be common with Type 1.
Best of luck to you in helping her make this important decision!
