I have had diabetes for 18 months and recently put on insulin because my levels were over 400. I have done everything right, the right foods, exerise, and rest. I am thin and not overweight. I am having a very hard time mentally with this and am very depressed. Is there anyone who might offer some help on how to cope with this?
Thanks

Hi apploosa,
Sorry to hear about your depression, it is something that most diabetics seem to have from time to time. Reacting to the condition is the main cause. If you go to "ASK THE EXPERTS" board and type depression in the search box, you will see there is a topic, "Are diabetics more prone to depression?" Have a read through and any questions, please ask.
Regards Catherine.

Hi apploosa,
This sounds very familiar. I've lost count of folks (myself included) who have joined this forum feeling they are doing everything right but unhappy because their control is not where they want it to be.The trouble is that too many of us are being fed out-of-date information on our dietary needs.
What advice have you been given by your care team? I'd like to bet it is the same as I was given....eat plenty of starchy carbs with every meal etc. etc!!! I did that for several years until discovering this site and promptly read of the amazing success stories of those who had cut down on their carb. intake. This was the complete opposite of what I had been told to do and it's hard to believe that can be right at first.
I'd like to suggest you go to the low-carb section and read the "success stories" thread. It will give you some real food for thought and I hope inspire you too. Hopefully, once you feel inspired, your depression will lift because you'll feel more able to tackle the problem head on.
If you need to ask any questions there are lots more knowledgeable folk than me here, so take a look around the site. There is masses of info to help you.
All the best, chocoholic.

In view of the speed of onset it's possible you have LADA/Type 1. Have they checked your C-Peptide and GAD? Also what are your lipids?

Here's some good information on balancing your carbs against insulin

Many of us find that depression improves significantly with BG control.

Could you please tell me more about LADA or where I might find more info on this. My sugar levels increased twice what they were in last two months. I keep thinking there is something else going on. Thank you Trinkwasser for bringing this to my attention.

(also covers MODY)

basically it is Type 1 but whereas in children you can go from normal to "die without insulin" within days, in adults it is much slower to progress and may take months or even years

It's often missed because of the classic training in terms of age of onset. I've read that it's actually commoner than childhood onset Type 1.
