Hi everyone,
I hope someone can help me out because I'm struggling. I have type 1 diabetes and I've had kidney disease for the past 2 years. My kidney function is 11% and when it drops to 7-8%, I'll have to start dialysis. In the meantime, I'm still carb counting as a way of managing my blood sugar, but from what the diabetic clinic have told me, because my kidney function is so low, my kidneys aren't filtering my novorapid through my system quick enough and it's causing me to have a lot of hypos. I'm currently waiting to get on a waiting list for something called a PKE, which is a kidney and pancreas transplant, so eventually, this won't be an issue, but that could be years away. Is anybody else going through this, or does anybody know how to manage? I've been taking less insulin when carb counting, but my blood sugar still goes too low or too high. Any advice would be appreciated

Hi @Matthew Thickitt and thank you @Zhnyaka for the tag. I presume you have been put on a low phosphate and low protein diet? I was told to do this from 2000 until my eventual double transplant in 2013. I am not familiar with novorapid, but I wouldn't be able to advise on doses. My instant reaction would be to contact your hospital team via the contact button on their website. Mine would be Addenbrooke's Diabetes. Are you in the UK? Do you have an allotted Co-ordinator yet? They might put your mind at rest about insulin doses. It might help to know what an average day's meals consist of, just to help slow the kidney deterioration down. Mine showed problems as early as 1973, but because of strict control (from 1979) and adhering to suggested diets, my kidneys served me for 40 years, even in a dodgy way1 I avoided dialysis by 8 days!! The very best of luck to you. Feel free to ask anything and I shall try to help.
