Hi this is my first time asking a question on Forum and 'hello'.
I was diagnosed with Diabetes 2 when I was in my fifties and now I am 73 years of age. My sugars are not always as stable as I would like them but the doctor continues to tell me that my 'sugars' are fine when my blood test results come through. However, I have been told at my last check up that my kidneys are now functioning at 50% and was told to drink excessive amounts of water a day. I am also on water tablets to help with my circulation. Wanting to find out a little more about this I went on line to see if I could get answers. I said that I was on tablets Metformin and Glimperide and was told that drinking loads of water was not good for the kidneys and would over work them and Metformin was not a good medication to take with diabetics having problems with their kidneys! Are these answers true? If anyone knows I would appreciate before I make a fool of myself at my doctors and say his advice was wrong?
:(

Your Heath is the most important thing so never think a question is a silly question if you are at all concerned get back to the docs and tell them what you have found out hopefully they will listen to you and investigate
Good luck let us all know how you get on :-)

Hi flo and welcome to the forum.

As we age, our kidney function declines and this article explains it.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/97841 ... dneys.html (It is written by a Dr.)

Read this article as well, whilst Metformin can protect healthy kidneys, it can be dangerous for people with established kidney disease.

Metformin is excreted through the kidneys and if they are not functioning well, the Metformin could build up in the body until it reaches dangerous levels.

http://www.healthcentral.com/diabetes/c ... n-kidneys/

I would ask to see a nephrology specialist if you are not happy with your G.P.'s explanations.

Hope this helps.

Take care,

CC.

I agree with a above posts. Speak to your doctor or request a referral to a specialist consultant.
I was diagnosed with stage 3-4 kidney failure yet my GP at the time continued to prescribe Metformin and I ended on life support due to developing lactic acidosis.
I changed GP as well as a load of other things in my life. I am fine now thank goodness.

My husband is a T1 with kidney failure. He doesn't yet need dialysis, but they sqay it's only a matter of time. I am devising a low protein diet to help.
