Hi, I recently got a lot of info from other diabetics on here in a post I made. I was diagnosed with an over active thyroid and have type 1 diabtes which ive had for 12 years. Ive ost a lot of weight, almost 3 stone and I am not far off being underweight on the bmi scale. I lost weight but I think most of this has been muscle as I was never too overweight to begin with. My legs are the worst affected and to be honest at the moment they look awful. I dont have problems with walking but i dont like the way they look and I know people may think i should be grateful i havent had problems with walking and should count my blessings but i would love to build back the muscle to make them look normal again. I walk about 5 miles a day which causes no end of hypos but thats another story im currently working on to be able to exercise without blood sugars dropping. I just dont seem to be getting anywhere and if anything my legs are getting worse and more skinny. I am being treated with carbimizole, will the muscle wastage stop once my thyroid is back to normal. Have other type 1s had any form of muscle wastage and is there anything I can do to either slow or stop it. What exercises are best for this. I know health is far more important than looks but the drastic change is really getting me down. Please dont think i should just get on with it as i am currently fighting diabetes control, thyroid problems and now this. Any ideas what may help. Thank you

Hi Josie

Sorry that you are having such a rotten time. Here is a link on hyperthyroidism in case you have not seen it. Muscle weakness and weight loss appear to be par for the course for your condition. It also appears that long-term treatment may be required. http://www.bupa.co.uk/individuals/healt ... ve-thyroid

Hope this helps and take care.

Regards

Doug
