Does anybody know anything about how diabetics get on in prison?

I am Type 1 and take insulin by injection. I am back in court at the end of the month and am expecting a custodial sentence. Just wondering how things will work - know I won't be allowed have needles but presume I'll get my injections from a nurse or somebody. i know it's a long shot but just wondering if anybody knows?

Matt,

when are you up? depending on what your offence is, i know that courts have instructions to try and avoid custody where poss, i have links with hmp's i could poss try and find out for you, also could you or your solicitor and/or psr author use this to try and avoid custody

Diabetics in prison have their insulin stored with the medical staff on the wing they are on and recieve extra food to supplement their diet.

I get sentenced in 2 weeks. I had my meeting with Probation and mentioned it - they asked me about my medical situation but my solicitor has told me to be ready for getting a prison sentence so that's what I'm doing. If I get something else I would be the happiest man ever. Having all this hanging over me for the past few months has been tough and I sort of just want to get it over with now.

Matt,

without knowing the actual offence its hard to say, if its being heard at magistrates thats an advantage, if its crown then its not, if your in employment then thats an advantage, also if you pleaded guilty stright away that scores good points.

did probation probation indicate what they might reccomend in their psr, as courts will often go along with their reccomendation, solicitors always talk like that

Hello Matt

If you do get sent to prison, then do find out if you will be able to keep your insulin pens on you. It will be far easier for you to look after yourself using twice daily biphasic than it will using bolus/basal.
