Last week, I must have caught some kind of stomach virus that caused diarrhea and severe nausea (without actually vomiting). The thing is, from the moment I started feeling unwell, I noticed that anything I ate took a REALLY long time to raise my BG levels. At one point, I got scared because I was on the verge of hypoglycemia, so I drank a Coke. I didn't end up going into hypoglycemia, but it took almost 3 hours for the Coke to take effect.
The issue continued for about 3 or 4 days; anything I ate would take forever to raise my BG. It has slowly started to stabilize, and now I'd say that the absorption of carbs isn't like it was before the virus, but it’s getting closer.
However, for some reason, my need for insulin has now decreased significantly—I have to inject a lot less insulin or I’m in hypoglycemia all day.
Is this normal? I consulted my doctor, who said that it’s normal for the stomach to slow down during a stomach virus. But my question is, does this happen to everyone and I’m just more aware of it because I can track my glucose curve on my phone, or is it something specific to my stomach or related to being diabetic?
For years, I've also noticed that when I lie down after eating, my blood glucose rises more slowly than when I stay upright, so I’m worried about possibly having gastroparesis or something similar. Am I crazy?
I hadn’t had gastroenteritis for 15 years, and in the past 6 months, I’ve had 2 very similar episodes, which is why I’m a bit worried. Also, my bilirubin levels went up a lot, and I turned yellow
