Diabetes and Subtalar Fusion Ankle Operation

Hi

I am due to enter hospital for a long awaited subtalar fusion operation. Today I was informed by my GP that my second fasting blood test showed a second high blood sugar reading and I am now to attend the diabetic clinic nurse. My appointment is two days before I go into hospital on the 20th of May. I am now worried that possible diabetes could result in my operation being cancelled or delayed.

I would welcome any advice please.

You need to get in touch with your GP and also the Hospital where you are having the Operation ASAP.

I went for an Operation on my knee once and was all gowned up, waiting to go down to Theatre.
A few minutes later the Surgeon comes up to me and says,
" How long have you been a Diabetic ? "
I looked at him blankly, then said,
" Probably about thirty seconds !!! " :?

That was my diagnosis of Diabetes. Needless to say, my Operation was immediately cancelled and took place a few weeks later.

I too was due an operation. I personally have chosen to delay mine, for the time being (as other medical problems have clouded the issue).

That said, the only thing you need to know is that diabetes does add some risk to an operation, but as your condition is known to the medics they can allow for this factor. If your surgeon and his team are still happy to go ahead with your op then you should trust them and go ahead with it.

Thanks for the two responses.

I have spoken to the pre-op examination staff and been assured that they deal 'all the time' with diabetes patients; so, I am intending to go ahead. Apparently one gets priority service for an operation - normally first on the list.
