I am type 2 diabetic, and have been for 5 years i take 500mg metformin twice daily, about 18 months ago i noticed a swelling in my neck next to my thyroid. After seeing a specialist a couple of times, and having a couple of needle aspiration tests they could,nt make their minds up what the lump is, so now i have got to have an operation to remove the left lobe of my thyroid and the lump which is increasing in size. Can diabetics be more susceptible to thyroid problems,or is it just a case of bad luck :?:

Hello resmart

Sorry to hear of your thyroid problems, but yes sometimes thyroid problems and diabetes often go hand in hand, esp the overactive and underactive thyroid problems, as these are also auto immune disorders and if you have one auto immune disorder you can be more prone to get another one, for example diabetes and crohns disease or diabetes and coeliac disease....as if things are not bad enough already huh? I had a complete thyroidectomy and was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of years later but you know I have recovered well and am dealing with my diabetes really well too, I can honestly say that I am very healthy nowadays.

I dont know about a lump on the thryoid, presumably you had a thyroid function test? If so what was the result.

I hope all goes well with your operation and wish you a speedy recovery.
