Hello there, i was wondering if anyone else suffered with both Anxiety and Diabetes Type 1... I havent quite got a good handle on how to cope with both and was hoping someone could share some advice x

Hi @Tinyitaliana
just going to bump your post to see if we can get some support for you-- anxiety is not much fun as it adds to the already full day we have coping with D.
have you looked at any books on CBT ( Cognitive behaviour Therapy )
these might provide an insight and assist you .

keep posting
x

Hi @Tinyitaliana. Yes I have had Type 1 for 35 years and I also suffer with GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder)

The anxiety at times can feel absolutely debilitating and answering a ringing phone can cause me to role play in my head what will happen if I answer it and other times I can manage to some extent reasonably well.

What I will say though is that it is always there, it is just a matter of how severe !

I have had therapy (CBT) and this surprised me. I am a natural cynic but it it was extremely good and made me look at things in a slightly different way. I would suggest giving this a go as it helped me and I still use some of the tools today to help when I am feeling the fear !

I have also had other therapy and have been on and off of anti depressants for about twelve years. The one I am taking at present is Duloxitine and it is actually licensed to be used specifically for GAD. It has certainly taken the edge off my anxiety though as said the anxiety is always there..

I find that when my sugars are heading low I can become extremely confused. The anxiety becomes laced with this confusion and it takes on a different twist so managing my levels is a help and generally my sugars are managed well..

People who do not suffer with it have no idea how quality of life affecting it is when we are in the core of it.

Doing things I enjoy helps a great deal. When I am enjoying something and not fundamentally thinking about myself I feel good. From my experience when I am anxious it is because I am thinking about "my situation"and when I do that I loose perspective. For me it is about perspective and the way I perceive things.

Anything that gets you out of your own thinking (doing something you enjoy) will help. For me that will be watching a good horror or eating out somewhere nice. My anxiety is always at it's worse when I have time to sit and think about things !

I strongly suggest though through my own experience that you try to get a referral through your GP for CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) It really helped me.
