Anonymous question submitted:

Hi , I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but have other health problems as well. I get down because of this and am on Esipram for depression. My wife calls them my psycho pills and doesn't understand that I find that offensive. She is also not very supportive and thinks that I should just get on with everything as if I have no problems. Should I expect her support ?

Your wife may not understand have you considered going back to your gp to say how your feeling and see if you can have some free Cbt most areas offer this.

I agree with abs. When I first had a depressive episode my husband hadn't seen me like that & was scared. But now after a few years he's learnt to monitor my moods & can tell me first when I need to go back on my meds.

Unfortunately it's all about education, not just the patient but also their network around them.

The CBT worked for me only when I'd found the right counsellor though (I'm very particular lol).

I hope you manage to get this sorted. Good luck & don't forget we can always support you on here :)

T2, Metformin 850 Mg (1 tablet twice daily), venlafaxine 75mg (1 tablet daily), buscopan 10mg (2 tablets 4 times daily)

Calling your medication your pscho pills may be her way of coping with your illness, I always refered to mine as happy pills. Have you explained to her that her name for your medication makes you unhappy. For someone who has never suffered through depression it can be difficult to understand how affected you can be, that your not just "down" or "feeling blue". Is there a local support group where you can both go, someone to talk to that isn't a close friend or relative can be a big help sometimes.
