Hello all, Can anyone give me any advice and information? I had a heart attack 18 months ago and was then diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have managed this by diet only and have stable bloods of between 4.5 and 7. However I now have peripheral neuropathy in my feet and have been sent for blood tests but advised that I may need to go on metformin to prevent further nerve damage. I didn't think I could take metformin having had a heart attack?

Thanks in advance

Hi Jillyp,
The only references I can find are caution in metformin and heart failure.
This article says, http://www.drugs.com/metformin.html
If you have a history of heart disease you may need a dose adjustment or special tests, (It does not specify the tests).
You need to speak with your G.P.and Consultant to make sure and to put your mind at rest.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

I you can keep your Bg right down, the neuropathy might improve. I've not heard anything against Metformin in heart patients. You should get the doctor, who warned you, to explain.
