I don't know if anyone else saw a programme the other week about animals in zoos and various breeding programmes they were doing by zoos throughout the world co operating with each other and swapping animals for mating?

There was a UK zoo (in London I think) that got a new male monkey from a European zoo hoping he would mate with their female monkeys. Sadly the male monkey died after only a few weeks and the cause of death was DIABETES.

This took my by surprise, for I was under the impression that diabetes is:

1. A human disease
2. Caused by our poor diet, food additives and sedentary lifestyles

Or perhaps the monkeys are fed the same food stuff as us humans which does then prove beyond reasonable doubt that it is the rubbish we are feeding our bodies on that is the root cause of diabetes

I understand that cats and dogs can be diabetic because i have seen treatments adverised for this,

I suppose he same applies to any species with a pancreas.

Hi all, my friends black labrador [ smooth coated type] is diabetic , so yep domestic animals can be diabetic. The dog has a wonderful rural and highly active lifestyle yet IS diabetic .
Thou she does have a habit that wont help -toddles off to the neighbouring farms and houses getting fed there besides at home!
My poor friend has to keep going round asking everyone 'not' to feed her.... O dear!

That dog must be quite a worry for your friend Anna as labradors are always hungry. Perhaps she should have a diabetes ID collar? If they are not available perhaps there is a business opportunity for someone? Dragon's den?

We have two degus who thankfully (touch wood) don't have diabetes yet, however they are really prone to getting this so have to live a virtually sugar free lifestyle.

(I occasionally want to have some of their food pellets rather than my meals lol!)

I saw a programme where a zoo in UK had a Type 1 Diabetic Monkey. (Remember type 1 is different to type 2)

I think any animal that has a pancreas has the possibility of getting Diabeties and like us they can get:
Type 1 or Type 2.
The symptoms of Diabeties is pretty much the same in animals as it is in humans.
However some animals are more prone to diabeties like for Example in Hamsters, there's 5 different species:
Syrian Hamster
Robrovski Dwarf Hamster
Chinese Hamster
Russian Dwarf Hamster
Winter White Hamster

How ever the three in italics and bold are prone to Type 2 diabetes. Doesn't mean the others can't get it and as i said all animals with a pancreas has a possibility of getting type 1 or developing type 2.
