The prevalence of diabetes in urban India is accelerating at a rapid rate and now stands at 5.5 percent (just under 20 million people), compared with 4.6 percent in 2007 - equivalent to a 30 percent increase in actual population numbers over the last four years - according to new research by GfK HealthCare's Roper Global Diabetes Group. Moreover, a full 10 percent of these patients have been diagnosed in the past 12 months.

Also setting India apart from other diabetes markets is the low rate of blood glucose self-testing (includes testing by relatives/friends), where only 21 percent of patients self-test.

Well worth a read as it explains why the number of Type2 diabetics in India is rising.

"Underfed mothers produce, small, undernourished babies with metabolisms equipped for deprivation and unable to cope with plenty".
There is a lot of work going on in India to try to improve the diet of pregnant mothers so that their children will not be so susceptible to diabetes and heart disease. We did discuss this on another topic relating to a TV programme, cannot remember the title, and it was found that even the thin children who were followed up throughout their growth into adulthood had excess fat around their organs even though they were thin.

That is a very good programme for several reasons. Sadly subsequent Horizon progs have failed to reach the same standard. The one on Fukushima was dire by comparison imho.
