Diabetes ----- No More !!!!

I am 61 years old, 5ft 5ins and was recently diagnosed with Type2. I am on the diet and exercise plan. I am partly agoraphobic and so cannot attend the gym. However, I bought myself a stepper and plan to buy a pedometer. I have eliminated a lot of processed foods and and am eating healthily. I started out (on18/11/15) at 14st 3lbs and am now (30/12/15) 13st 8lbs. My goal is 12st, though that is higher than my BMI level. But this is something I will be discussing with my dietitian.

Hello Yorkshire_Ian, please don't expect too much from the dietician, they still tell you to eat carbs, at every meal,,,and it goes against everything you have discovered for yourself,,and managed to achieve on your own,,,some are even poo poo this site and tell you to look on the 'other site' diabetes .org.uk,, which does not have the support that you get from this site,,, and they mainly try to get you to sing up and membership, money and sell you stuff,,and it is very expensive. There is more information and discussion points on this site. I one I saw just one time,,,was very high handed,,and sneering about things I mentioned, your eyes are more important,,,,ttfn from Karen.

Well the information is out there,,,,it is the first day of 2016,,,greetings to all.

Hello Yorkshire_Ian. And a belated Welcome to the Forum. I was told to loose about 3 - 4lbs a week by the Diabetic Nurse. My aim is to get down to 11 and a half to 12 stone, but went a bit off the rails over Christmas and New Year. Have just ordered Carbs and Calories book to get myself motivated and thinking about an exercise bike.

Just catching up with what has been happening as I have been without internet connection for the past month and a half, this is through moving house to a brand new property on a new development before christmas.
Internet and phone line connection finally completed yesterday.
My weight has gone up slightly to 205lbs, muscle gain through exercise rather than fat, still continuing with exercise class and attending the gym twice a week, diet also continuing, no real weight gain over christmas and new year.
Thanks for all the encouragement posted while I was lost in the ether without internet.

Hi Liam,
If you've a smartphone, then buy yourself the Carbs & Cals app - it's much better than the book!

Also, delay the exercise bike until you try this:
1) brisk walk (15-20 minutes) first thing in the morning and before breakfast - it's great for burning fat as your glycogen levels will be at their lowest;
2) cut the carbs by reducing your consumption of carb-intensive foods (like wheat products, potatoes and the like) - the team running this site produce excellent low carb recipes, if you need ideas.

Photos before and after. I agree with Liam. I was so big I started walking because at the time that was all I could do. I played golf but struggled to walk so I used to use a buggy to get around the golf course. A slow progress but I stuck at it. I then moved up to speed walking. Now I ride my bike and use weights to train. So if I can do it anyone can. Never give up, and never listen to people who say you cant do it. You can!! Good luck to you all.

Hi last place. What a difference in the photos! Well Done Bet you are so pleased with yoursel

Yes I feel so much healthier. But the biggest thrill for me was being able to buy clothes in a store instead of online.

@lastplace Great photos. Are you a diabetic in remission now?

Personally I lost 60 lbs and now 8 lbs have crept back on, so only 52 lbs off. Yet I don't miss a night of training over at the local gym or 20mile ride on my bike. The Avatar actually shows where I ride a coastal route now that is minimum 10 miles each way. I get to stop at a Starbucks and have coffee. Its 950 Kcal workout (per mapmyride) & even though I've leaned up a great deal and now do German Volume Training (GVT) frequently I'm still coming up with diabetic numbers with my FBGs..However Professor Taylor says keep up with "Plenty of the E" as in "exercise".. I know I am doing plenty of "E"

Hi
Yes I'm in remission. I have a check up once a year which is normal. My doctor as told me I have reversed diabetes. I train at home and ride my bike. I try to ride 100 miles a week and train at least 5 hours a week. When I was diabetic I wore glasses but I don't need them now. I found a way to keep my weight down, and lose body fat,so I incorporate that into my training programme.
I'm a stubborn person so when someone tells me I cant do something I prove them wrong. Which helped me fight diabetes.
It's all about your state of mind. You either want to work and train towards your goal or you don't. You can tell people want to do, but you can't make them do it.
I will keep on my path and yes I feel so much healthier and fitter. I also must add when I started my programme I was 49 years old I'm now 53 so it doesn't matter what age you are, just go for it.
Stay healthy everyone.

@lastplace

Fantastic news. I am close now to remission but no cigar yet. (I don't smoke either, just a figure of speech.). I am getting very good control numbers and putting in some serious exercise everyday. I "Skirt" un-diabetic numbers ~ FBGs with low 104's etc but no nirvana yet. I've been putting in 40-60 miles a week on my road bike and GVT in the gym on alternate days. I am now 2 years into my programme but no promised-land yet. Professor Taylor looked at my numbers recently and basically said "Keep up the good work".

On a sad note when I was diagnosed 2 years ago I visited a friend who was (diabetic and,) 350lbs (give or take) in weight and needed help. I encouraged him to join me on my quest for better health. Alas he blew me off and didn't want to know anything about getting healthier. I will be attending his funeral this coming Saturday. He died just last week from (I suspect) diabetic complications. I have felt bad about his death, since I almost visualized it in the last 6-8 months. It doesn't help as his wife is diabetic too. I hope that now maybe his wife can have a moment of clarity going forward. I hope no one now jumps down my throat for telling this story. There are many people on this forum that have jumped down my throat for feeling the way I have. My diabetic friend left a wife and two young children behind. NB Note to Moderator. If you feel the above paragraph is inappropriate please delete it. I do not wish to offend anyone's feelings.

And as @lastplace has said . "Stay healthy everyone"!

This is a very sad story. Not inappropriate or offensive at all! (@Living-by-the-beach - you are never those things IMHO!)

Very nice to read the happy success stories. And I guess, re the sad stories 'Lest we forget' applies?

Indeed - Stay healthy everyone!

Did you send a mail to Roy Taylor, or did you meet him in person? It always seems that he responds if people email him

Great news keep up the good work It's a sad story about your friend but it's like I said you can tell people what to do, but
you can't make them do it. But some people listen and turn there life around. Stay healthy my friend

Congratulations. Well done! I was diagnosed 2015 I am Now 70 yrs old . I was 74kg now 62kg. I watch everything I eat no sugar cakes etc. The specialist diabetic nurse got quite angry with me as I told her I was going to limit carbs. Her attitude was take metformin .. you need carbs!! I take two tablets a day . I test all the time as I am still trying to see what causes my sugar levels to rise. I think everyone is different and foods affect us in different ways. I hope I can achieve what you have.
