I wrote this poem for world diabetes day 2015, but wasn't a member of the forum then! Just came across it and thought I'd share it with u. Hope it gives anyone that's having a tough time a sense of hope and a bit of support

x

"How do u inject yourself?" They said
If I didn't I certainly would be dead
The insulin that keeps me living
Is the gift that keeps on giving

Injections, pumps, ketones and tests
Trying to keep my sugar the best
Control, patience, time indeed
These are the additional things you'll need!

High as the sky or through the floor
Like standing on a wonky seesaw
After meals; high and sometimes low
How this works, I just don't know

A struggle with which we have to deal;
Calculating every single meal
Before you're meal you must do your maths
Add, times, divide then eat at last

People ask if injections hurt
Sometimes yes, but more so words
Misconceptions have made up their minds
If they'd only ask, the truth they'd find

Diabetes equals sweets and cake
I think my friend you've made a mistake
Diabetes is what I've said above
A condition we have to try and love!

We are allowed sweets, so don't assume not
Chocolate and alcohol, but not a lot
Like any 'normal' person should eat
Balancing out meals allows us this treat

Testing, insulin, planning, and really
We're getting towards normal, nearly!
The doctors, nurses and their care
Throw in some fitness, we're almost there

There are worse things we could have, it's true
We just wanted to share what it's like with you
We hope we haven't been gory!
That's diabetes, and that's our story

Thank you! My diabetes centre are talking about putting it up in their waiting area! I made my hard faced, male 50 year old doctor cry with it! Haha he said he never actually realised how people felt! X

Pam Ayres?!!

Oh, I wish I looked after me insulin
It's gone all warm & had to be binned.
I left it in me car one summers day & argh It's useless
nay, the heat has killed my dog as well
Named Bell, she was trained to sniff if I go low
Now me Haribo is one mass of dough.
Oh, I wish I looked after me stuff... o_O;)
