Hi,
My mother is in her 80's and has type 2 diabetes. Over the Christmas for some reason she had two hypoglycemic attacks in the early hours of two nights in a row. In the first she was responsive enough that we could get some fizzy drink into her and she came around OK, on the second night she was so far gone that she needed to be rushed into hospital.
At this stage she was on three gliclizide tablets per day and insulin by pen on a night time (24 units).
Since her episodes she has not reached a stage where she needs the insulin and is still on half her dose of gliclizide. Her blood sugar levels always did rollercoaster a bit (occasionally in the low 20s and down to high single figues), but now her BS is usually about 5 in the morning before food and rises to high single to low double figues after food. She usually has a part of a banana and a fizzy drink through the night to keep her level up until breakfast.
I wonder if without the gliclizide she would be able to go through the night without a sugar boost.
When she was in hospital the diabetic nurse said that she had patients who, after an episode, had taken a few days/weeks for the body to reset itself to the way it was. At this time, it has been nearly a month since her hypoglycemic attacks.
Has anyone had a similar experience or can offer a suggestion as to why this has happened or what we might expect?
Many thanks
Gary
