Diabetes Support Group

Hi,

We are just starting a diabetes support group in the local area and will be having talks etc by local health workers. I am pretty convinced that the carbs at every meal approach is wrong for me and probably for other diabetics and would like to be able to encourage others to look at their diets but I also don't want to be kicked out of the group! I have bought a number of books on LCHF diets and was wondering, if you were attending a support group if you would appreciate a library of books on diet that contradict the advise we are given by our health professionals, or should I just stay quiet and let each person find their own way?

Any advice please?

I'm all for enlightenment. And I'm all for ... if something has worked for you and a lot of other people ... add it to the already existing information. Perhaps the reason so many people are diabetic today is because the 'healthy diet' propagated by the health care system, isn't so healthy after all. So I don't see any reason to keep quiet about anything that WORKS but that isn't yet on the NHS list of good advice. I don't mean bang the LCHF drum but just put it forward as an alternative diet for those who may want to try it.

I just told my DN and my GP that I was following the LCHF diet and was feeling much better for it. I hadn't received any dietary advice from them whatsoever apart from a book about diabetes which I skimmed, didn't like and discarded in favour of the websites I received via this forum. I'm good at assessing information very quickly and am almost clairvoyant when it comes to detecting bull doo doos if you know what I mean. I just haven't always acted on that instinct in the past ... and it got me ... diabetic. Good luck! :D

hi lesleyanne 2

Yes i would appriciate any books or info someone brought to a support group you can never have to much info, things are changing all the time so its nice to maybe read things you never new about.

I've been trying to find a diabetic support group near me but unfortunatley there's nothing, where i used to live they had a monthly diabetic meeting held in the hospital where you could meet and talk to other diabetics over a cuppa and some dry biscuits
Unfortunatley the woman had to stop doing it had she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but i really do miss those meetings and i wish there was more of them about.

Good luck with it

Hi, LesleyAnne

Good luck and best wishes to you and your support group.

The challenge is for all the group to feel they are giving something to the group.

I would wait until another member brings up LCHF.

Allow the group to criticize the health professionals before you introduce fresh ideas .

Get to know the group members and there ways until you feel its time to discuss LCHF.(books etc; good idea)

My simple point is, because you are worried you may be kicked out indicates the timing is wrong with that issue.

Do not worry as success is is all yours, due to your thoughtful preparation in advance.

Roy. :)

Thanks all I really appreciate your feedback on this.

Tracey, contact Diabetes UK, they might be setting up a new support group in your area and be glad of your interest. That's what I did and am now secretary of the very newly formed East Bristol Diabetes UK Support Group. We have our first meeting on 26th January and are currently busy arranging it all.

Grace and Roy, I think I might wait until after the first public meeting is out of the way and then suggest the library idea, or maybe suggest that we get people who successfully control their diabetes to come and talk about how they are doing it. Public meetings are bi-monthly so it might be a while before we get to it.

Guess I am a bit evangelical, and want to shout it from the rooftops... I must learn patience!
