My grandson aged 9 years has type 1 diabetes. Please can someone advise the best place to get training/assistance to understand diabetes so that I can support him when he comes to stay with me. Thank you for your help.

Sorry to hear about your grandson...I always think how awful this must be for family of a young diabetic...I hope he and everyone else is coming to grips with it all.

Is he carb counting? If he is, you may be better to get your son/daughter to explain how this works...I'm sure they probably would anyway for their own peace of mind.

There is an online course called BDEC that I know of, this will give you a good idea of what it's all about.

It may also be worth checking out the 'Children, Teens and Parents' part of the forum as they may have more specific advice in terms of courses, books and information available.

Well done you for taking it upon yourself to find out the in's and out's, I would imagine it's a pretty daunting thought without the knowledge and support that parent's get, but I'm sure his parent's will appreciate a break from it all and feel a lot more comfortable leaving him in your care knowing that you are prepared and aware of the potential implications

Hope this helps...wish you well.

Hi London Iris
a good source of help for young people is the www.jdrf.co.uk site as they have a kids section.

for you to learn about diabetes you could learn loads by reading around this forum -- the topics are varied and many relate to young people with diabetes.

if you have any questions just start a new topic and somebody will be along to help answer :)
