Hi to all,
My name is Ian and I have just joined this forum hoping to get some help on various issues relating to Diabetes.
I have Type 1 Diabetes, also have ESRD and Peripheral Vascular Disease, ( I had my lower right leg amputated on 22nd December last ). I have dialysis 3 x 4 hours each week. I weigh circa 63k and am 5ft 10 in tall. I am on a low-potassium diet. My wound is taking forever to heal and am back home for a month. I will be returning to hospital when it heals in order to learn to use my prosthetic.
I am 38 yrs old. I was on the pancreas/kidney transplant list until December but now removed whilst these issues are addressed.
I have a couple of questions which I hope some of you may be able to help with.
(1) Does having my leg amputated and having PVD exclude me from pancreatic and/or kidney transplantation ?
(2) If I boil "chips" twice to remove potassium before frying in vegetable oil, can I have them two or three times a week.
I had pains in my leg for 18 months prior to amputation, I had my podiatrist tell me my purple and swollen foot was , "some fluid that will disappear in a few days", I pointed out the pains to my doctors etc for 18months and they simply said it was cramps post-dialysis !!! Eventually I was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where the surgeon took one look and basically said the leg is dead. Does anyone think it should have been spotted earlier given my constant complaints of pain ???
Thankyou in advance. I also feel I can bring some advice and possibly help to the forum, I have been diabetic for 22yrs. I have nearly lost my life on a number of occasions due to Ketoacidosis, Viral Encephalitis etc.
I took news of my diabetes very badly all those years ago, I abused drugs and alcohol massively. For the last 3 years I have had nothing other than prescribed medication, and zero alcohol. So if there is anyone out there who needs a wee bit of help and/or advice on these issues I will surely try and help.
Kindest Regards, Ian
