Hi. I've just been diagnosed with type 2 mid May.

In January 2023 my Haemoglobin A1c blood sugar level was 36 mmol/mol .

I had a major haemorrhoid surgery on March 22nd (12 years on the NHS waiting list as anaemic ) .

From 22nd March I was taking Lactulose 20mls x 2 per day plus 1 sachet of Laxido night and morning, then lowered on discharge from hospital 6 days later to 20ml at night and 15ml in the morning per day plus the Laxido. I am still taking this amount.

Mid April my blood sugar level went to 50 mmol/mol, and mid May to 52 mmol/mol. I still am taking 20mls at night and 15ml in the morning

Nothing in my diet has changed from January 2023. I don't bother making cakes as live on my own, rarely eat a biscuit, don't bother with alcohol, don't eat much pasta, or chocolate or deserts. Could this be the Lactulose causing this raised blood sugar levels?

Not sure how long I will be on Lactulose. as not yet seen the haemorrhoid consultant. Next diabetes review mid August.

Anyone got any thoughts/experience of raised blood sugar from taking Lactulose daily?

I had to take Lactulose for a while, some time ago now, but after my type 2 diagnosis. I too was worried about it affecting blood glucose levels. I found this article, I haven’t re-read it all now but it seems to conclude that Lactulose does not raise blood sugar levels.

I was advised that it was fine to take Lactulose every day as a stool softener.

I have Diverticular disease, and after an infected inflamed bowel was prescibed Lactulose. My worry was hang on this is pure sugar, surely it will raise my levels, but it doesn't we cannot process it, so it just travels through our system and does it's thing.
