Hello Everyone,

I am 38 years old and was diagnosed with T2 @ HbA1C 6.8% on the 1st of June 2021.
From all these journals on the internet that greater than 6.4 is diabetic and once you are above 6.4 you will never be able to come back to normal or even to the prediabetic stage and even if you manage you will not be able to stay there.

Question is :
Is it possible for me to go back to below 6.4, or even below 6
if I follow a control diet and weight training exercise.
I was not following any specific diet or any restriction on carbonated soft drinks or juices till now.

is it good to be diagnosed at 6.89 % or am I late to know ?.

Any Advice.

Hi @JSA3 and welcome!

6.89% is not such a high level - it’s roughly equivalent to 52 in the units used in the UK, which is just 4 points above the threshold of 48 mmol/mol used to diagnose diabetes in the UK. As you look around the forum, this converter might help you to understand the numbers being quoted by others: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-to-blood-sugar-level-converter.html

Definitely. There are countless people on here who have done just that, often from much higher starting points.

What you eat will have a far bigger impact than exercise, although that can help and has other health benefits. And reducing carbohydrates is the key to that. This website is a good starting point: https://www.dietdoctor.com/

Thank you for the swift response, appreciated it.

what If I Manage to go back to pre-diabetic or the normal stage, will I be able to stay there with a normal diet of less sugar intake? or will any normal diet shoot by sugar level back to a diabetic.

It really depends on what you mean by a normal diet. Modern diets tend to be full of sugar, because the food manufacturers have gone for the less fat more sugar option, and opted for the bliss point in many manufactured foods (basically add sugar until the product tastes bad.) So if you go back to the exact same diet you had prediagnosis you'll probably go back to diabetes.

As a T2, your problem is that you are eating more carbs than your body can cope with. So if you reduce those carbs then it is likely that your blood sugar will go back to normal. Long term, a meter will tell you whether your body can cope with your current carb level.

Just out of curiosity, are you carrying extra weight and/or do you have a family history of T2? (Both of those make T2 extremely likely, especially as weight gain is a side effect of T2, but there is a very very small probability that you are T1 instead, which would need extra tests for diagnosis).

with a normal diet

If by "normal diet" you mean the diet that has caused your T2 then why would you want to?

Wouldn't it be far better to reclaim your health and eat nutritious, healthy food and keep T2 in remission?

Thank you for the reply
By normal diet, I meant eating any concern as normal non-diabetic persons do.
I am 183 ( 6ft) tall and 90.5 KG

I was on 83 KG all these years, but the lockdown and work from home made it to 93.5 KG.
and now I am 90.5KG.

my mom is diabetic, diagnosed at age 42, regularly takes 80 insulin intake.

They eat that until they develop T2 diabetes then they have to stop and ask why.

When they realise their "normal diet" isn't so great then many of us decide to change what we eat and get healthier without needing medication.
Don't you think that is a worthwhile aim?

Thats a shame because T2's usually overproduce insulin already.. shoving yet more into an already saturated body isn't usually deemed a great idea.

So true...
