Thank you everyone. I have been tested for coeliac and indeed although I did not test positive tried a gluten free diet for 3 months and it did not make a difference - I have still got loads of GF flour in the cupboard from the experiments with GF bread. Going back on to gluten containing products made no difference to the problem. Basically I have been told to manage it with immodium type tablets end of story. I will get hold of the DSN tomorrow and see if she has any ideas - plastic pants sound good (ho not ho)
Hi @Katrina5664, yes diabetic diarrhoea is gastroparesis, a complication of the autonomic system sometimes known as Dan - diabetic autonomous neuropathy. Times of stress, rich, creamy food or for no reason, diarrhoea happens. Gastroparesis is nerve damage, causing diarrhoea/constipation, belching, farting and tender stomach areas, bloatedness. Feeling stuffed after 3 mouthfuls.. Totally charming. Not!! It can come and go, motilium and immodium can help, quitting wheat does to, well in some people How you doing now??
Sorry to take so long to reply - laptop packed up. I am keeping it fairly well under control in that it usually only flares up at about 8 in the evening for a couple of hours which is when I think my Lantus runs out and pushes my b s up. I am looking into changing the one dose of Lantus to two - splitting my dose - to see if I get better coverage. How are you doing?
mmm Hello Katarina I have coeliacs but also Bile acid malabsorption which gives you bad guts and not alot of people have come across it. You need a seHCAT scan which is also know as a nuclear test a phrase i prefer as it sounds much more impressive. (truth be told they give you a radioactive pill and you go back in a week and scan you to see if theres any sign of radioactivity and this will show whether you have Bile acid malabsorption) Suffice to say its an autoimmune problem and if it is that then its treated with powders the name of which i cant say or spell! I wish you well but your GP should be sending to to a gastro type specialist with your issue as i know through experience can be very debilitating. Kindest regards Tony
From reading this forum, autonomic diarrhoea and gastroparesis might not be the same. Perhaps these might help: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-complications/autonomic-neuropathy.html http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-complications/diabetes-and-gastroparesis.html
Thanks Tony Think I would need to change docs to get that done - I was basically told to take the tablets and manage it. But will take it up when I go for my review at the hospital in June. If I can keep to being at its worst late evening until then at least I can enjoy taking my dogs out morning and afternoon. Katrina
Thank you Struma, I read these and they are interesting I think I need talk to the diabetic doctor when I go for my review. Katrina
I don't know if anyone else has suggested this.... If you were on too much antibiotics for too long, you can kill the friendly bacteria in your bowels. Try taking yourt tablets to put the bacteria back there. I suffer from a similar problem only I know mine is a gluten-sensitivity.
Hi. Have you been tested for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). GP needs to refer you for gastroenterology dept a hydrogen breath test. If it is positive. a short course of antibiotics makes a big difference. Its common in diabetes. It can reoccur though. I was told I had autonomic neuropathy and also IBS years ago and suffered thinking nothing can be done. I had multiple food sensitivities causing diarrhea and wind. They have pretty much gone now. Good luck. I hope you get some answers soom
Thank you for all your replies there is interesting advice there which I will investigate further. Thanks again Katrina
Hi Katrina Whilst I realise you probably do have this horrible complication of diabetes, have you cut out onions, spring onions, leeks, shallots and basically all of the onion family? My sister has a violently horrible intolerance of all things onion and has been severely ill in the past from it. It is hidden in most processed food, so you would need to check. I mentioned it to a paediatrician once (my daughter had stomach problems) and it is a known phenomenon. I am mildly intolerant but manage a little bit of onion. I was very, very ill after a vegan meal at a wedding a couple of years ago. I really hope you can find a simple cause for this and get rid of the symptoms.
I was recently diagnosed with type 2 and started on 500mg x 2 per day of metformin and have suffered going some days 6+ times and not much notice! To the point unless I know where the loo is I either a, don't go out or b, don't eat or drink. No fun! I was diagnosed with ibs back in the 90's but worked out what to avoid and haven't really suffered in about 10 yrs until I started taking metformin gp said to give it time to settle hope he's right! :-(
If it doesn't settle, ask your doctor for the slow release version. This is kinder on the tummy. Meanwhile, make sure you drink a lot of fluids
