Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, I've recently developed an irritable bladder, so as well as low carbing, I also now need to avoid anything that irritates my very fussy bladder, plus I'm a pescatarian!

I'm doing ok with main meals, sticking to omelettes, fish and salad/veg, but I'm really struggling with snacks other than veg. I can't have the usual things I've been having until recently like cheese, yogurt, nuts, small amounts of choc, and I've been doing without snacks, but I have terrible PMT cravings at the moment (sorry if that's TMI  ), and I'm very close to eating my own body weight in crisps if I don't think of a snack soon

I'd be really grateful for any suggestions :D

Just wondering why an irritable bladder makes a difference as to what you can eat? Enlighten me

Caffeine and acidic foods such as onions can irritate the bladder, I eliminated these from my diet for the same reasons as Sirzy and found a big difference.

Dawnmc,

Lots of things are eliminated through the urine and as my bladder lining has been irriversably damaged by a UTI lots of food substances are now able to reach the cells which are usually protected by the mucosal lining of the bladder, which unfortunately, rarely grows back after damage :( This condition is known under the umbrella term of 'irritable bladder' or IC, in the same way you can have an 'irritable bowel'. But what it really means is there's not much that can be done to sort it out, other than dietry changes and medication. There's no cure as of yet :(

So now acidic foods, fermented foods, artificial sweeteners, preservatives and colourings leave me in agony for days. I was silly enough to try a small glass of white wine last weekend and am still paying for it now!

Noblehead,

I follow the IC diet quite closely and really pay the price for deviating from it if I'm ever tempted! I can't even eat almonds which are very alkaline, due to the high potassium content, so I'm really struggling with food at the mo as many foods that are bladder friendly aren't diabetes friendly and vice versa. What do you tend to do for snacks?

Hi Sirzy!

That must be awful for you! Can you eat seeds? Maybe you could dry-fry some pumpkin and sunflower seeds with a little soy sauce for a tasty snack? Obviously not too often as there is a lot of salt in soy sauce, but it might keep you off the crisps and won't budge your BG too much probably. Or how about making some vegetable crisps? I'm thinking maybe thinly sliced swede, a spray of olive oil and a little seasoning and bake until crisp-like - I've never tried it, but it might work and only 5g carb per 100g swede. If I think of any more I'll let you know.

Sirzy, my bladder isn't damaged like you have described and the consultant said it was an over-active bladder which could be controlled by dietary changes and bladder training exercises. Basically I just cut-out caffeine and drink decaff now, stopped using vinegar and vinegar dressings and eliminated tomatoes and onions (which I love) from my diet also, I rarely if ever snack now between meals unless I'm having a hypo and then it's jelly babies or a banana if I'm not too low.

Sorry I can't offer you any more info.

Right thanks for that, wow, you live and learn.

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

Smidge,

Unfortunately soy and nuts/seeds are a no-no, but the veggie crisps are a good idea. I've tried making courgette crisps before which are quite nice, I might experiment a bit more with other veggies. :)

I could just give up the snacking completely, but I find that small meals throughout the day keep my BG steady, rather than three big ones, just need to be a bit more inventive I suppose
