Hi Everyone,

I am quite new to these forums but you guys seem to be quite a knowledgeable bunch so I thought I would post for advice about my problems… today’s is about Diabetic Gastropathy.

First a little about me… I am a type 1 diabetic and have been for about 6-7 years (since I was 18). Not quite as well controlled as I should have been (around 9 HbA1c), I am now on a mission to get it to <7 so far so good (keeping a detailed diary is the only way I have found that works for me)

I have been feeling sick, bloated and sometimes dizzy for a year now and after a endoscopy was diagnosed with Ceolica disease and unfortunately even after a gluten free diet I wasn’t feeling any better so after more tests (barium swallow) I was diagnosed with Diabetic Gastropathy.

I believe this is not uncommon in diabetics so I thought some of you may have advice on how you manage it. I was given some tablets to take (Metoclopramide) but they made me so tired I could barley operate so I have stopped taking them. My new route is to eat very small amounts quite often to ensure there is not a massive amount in my stomach at any one time, as I believe it is the buildup of food that isn’t getting digested which causes the symptoms.

Its been a very difficult year, lots of test, and feeling sick all the time and looking after a newly born baby has not been a walk in the park, I am hoping to get everything under control… I hope someone has some more advice….

According to Bernstein, Only several monthes of GOOD blood sugar control, can reverse this condition( Bernstein means BGs at about 5 all the time for good control. the medication you are on is one of the strongest available, but Bernstein recommends the syrup formulation, because the condition it's meant to correct, reduces the efficacy of pills. Otherwise, he recommends exercise after eaing. A brisk walk. or ab crunches. He does describe a yoga method used by one of his patients. It involves sucking in the abdomen as far as possible and them pushing it out. All these methods massage the stomach to help it to move.

Thank you very much for your response, it gives me a little bit of hope. I actually have Bernstein’s book but am yet to read it, I will go dig it out. I will get onto my doc about the syrup version of the drug, do you know if there are any that may work but the tiredness side effect isn’t as bad?

Constant BGs of 5 feels a little unattainable to me right now but I will certainly do my best.

Are all foods digested the same or would I be best sticking to some foods over others e.g. yogurt over rice pudding etc?
