Diabetic maculopathy

Hi guys and girls.

Received a bit of a worrying letter today from the diabetic eye clinic where I live.

I recently went for a screening and it appears I have signs of maculopathy in my eyes. I'm quite shaken up with this as I don't really know what it is, what the treatment options are, and because of the complications my mum has had with her diabetes I'm pretty worried.

I'm fairly healthy at 24, despite the cigarettes. I am trying to stop but hav not given up completely yet. I'm quite sure that smoking may have something to do with it.

In short I'd just like some advice and someone to tell me it'll be okay...

If you read through the website you will see that smoking is a No No, do give them up completely whatever you do.

I know nothing of the treatment for maculopathy but I have noticed that both diabetes and smoking seem to damage similar parts of the body first. It's as though both affect circulation because the extremities and the eyes are most at risk. Smoking and diabetes give you a double whammy.

Let's hope it doesn't get any worse and that there is something that can be done to help.
