Type of diabetes
Type 2
If my doctors practice diabetic nurse takes me off Metformin because she thinks I've controlled my type 2 diabetes so well, am I still classed as being diabetic? I've gone from 95kg to 77kg in approx 18 months cut out all sugary drinks, sweets, cakes etc and my HbA1c has gone from 75 to 43. I'm worried that being taken off the Metformin I may go backwards. Does it help that much? Please advise.

To be honest I have no idea. I was thinking about that earlier as my level are pretty good at the moment

I stopped taking Metformin as I was having too many hypos while on it and once it was stopped so did the hypos so it does have some effect but it shouldnt affect your BS too much but we are all different and our bodies react differently to medications ect. At 43 you are still in the pre diabetic range and if you are unsure about coming off Metformin it us best to discuss this with your nurse as I am sure you will not be forced to come off Metformin, if anything most would like you to stay on it for longer.

This is why I want to discuss with my GP. I don't think the nurse should be making these decisions.

If your A1c was at 75 you are a diabetic. It is awesome that you have managed to bring it under control and that is what we are all trying to do here, but you are still diabetic. No one can tell you whether to take meds or not, nor can we tell you what exactly will happen if you go off them as we are all different, but whatever you choose, you are still diabetic. This is for life. You will have to continue watching your diet for the rest of your life or those numbers will start to creep up while you are not looking. The good news is that you obviously know how to stop this. Congrats on that great number.:)

Thank you. As you say just a question of keeping on top of it.

I stopped taking Metformin (2 x 500mg Metabet SR) in March this year (HbA1c was 40). I had a further HbA1c test in July which showed that it had risen slightly to 43. There may be other factors involved, however, as I also reduced exercise during the period to alleviate another issue. After stopping Metformin I regained a few pounds, but I think it was making me a bit dehydrated so not entirely surprised.

I dropped my HbA1c from 88 to 32 in 3 months, but my GP had no interest in taking me off Metformin.

My HbA1c has dropped considerably further subsequently but it was only at my 12 month check that the DN mentioned that maybe I should stop taking Metformin as she considered my HbA1c was too low.

I had in fact stopped taking it and cancelled the repeat prescription months earlier. I noticed a 0.5 mmol increase in my daily base BG when I initially stopped taking the drug, but that soon disappeared when I increased exercise.

However whatever happens I am still Diabetic. Completely under control but still have it.
