Hi I'm new here because it seemed a good time to look for advice from those in my boat so to speak but after my last appointment I'm more confused than ever!

I had gestational diabetes and for two years after have hovered on the impaired glucose side of the fence but started on metformin as a preventative measure. I started to feel poorly about four months ago and my levels were up so after speaking with my gp they increased my Metformin to 1g. On my next visit my gp told me that they were basically diagnosing diabetes but I was to do bloods again and see dr/diabetes nurse. Next gp confirmed diagnosis. The nurse however said that a level of 48 is on the limit and she then asked about metformin but she's now made me wonder if it is or isn't? She has referred to dietician but any advice or opinion gratefully received!

Many Thanks

What should my HbA1c be?
If you have diabetes, the target level of HbA1c should be agreed on an individual basis between you and your doctor as maintaining your HbA1c to less than 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) may not always be possible to achieve.

  • For people without diabetes, HbA1c is usually between 20-41 mmol/mol (4-5.9%)
  • For people with diabetes, an HbA1c level of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) is considered good control
  • For people at greater risk of hypoglycemia (lower than normal blood sugar) a target HbA1c of 59 mmol/mol (7.5%)may be given to help reduce their risk of hypos.
At 48, it looks like a toe over the line, I'm afraid.

Mrsc84 - I only wish to say that if I were in your shoes, I would treat myself as a diabetic (e.g. by diet and exercise). It surely would do you no harm (rather the opposite ;) ), and you should consider it a blessing to be forewarned this early. You may then control this for years and years and live a happy and long life.

Thanks! I've been on metformin
For two years now and the doctors are quite puzzled by me as I'm active, eat healthily (mostly!!) my bmi is 25 but both parents and sibling were diagnosed early so I blame the parents lol!
