Hi Folks
I need a little advice from anyone who has either been as misfortunate as myself or similar. on August third i had a seizure at around 8am in the morning. i woke feeling strange was unable to verbally communicate and didnt respond to my partner during conversation. i mangaed to put my work uniform on and make it downsatirs where the only remotely sugary item i culd find in my confused state was a pack of ice gem biscuits ( horrible and not very effective i know) they had a value of 24.9g carbs. after this i have limted memory of what happend but somehow i made it into the lounge where i attempted to put on my socks but what happened next is my partners recolection of events.
i slumped fowards and hit the floor making strange moaning noise and convulsing, i apparently vomited slightly possible the ice gems i was still chewing and blood from bitting my toungue all down the right side from front to back.
when i came round i had three paramedics in the room looming over me. The paramedic took my bloods and instantly dimissed my diabetes as the cause due to the reading being 4.7
i got taken to hospital where i had a ct scan on my head and chest and a MRI scan on my head all came back clear and after a night in hospital and sugar readings between 4 and 7 i was discharged on saturday afternoon but with a referal to get an EEG from neurology within two weeks.
three weeks later i had an EEG which later proved to be clear of any epilepsy although the consultant insisted that i had a sleeping EEG done to be sure this also came back all clear with no signs of epilepsy.
My diabetic specialist is with me on this one and says it was a hypoglycemic induced epileptic fit which only occured due to low blood sugar. in theory in the time that passed between ingesting the ice gems if i had had normal blood sugars my levels would have been much higher when the para medics took their reading technicly suggesting that i was very very low prior to the ice gems.
any hoo i was told to stop driving for six months its now been 4 and a half months and ive lost my job and independance two vital attributes to my active lifestyle. when i contacted the dvla they have asked me to either voluntarily surrender my license and under go medical tests all be it that ive had all the tests done with no bad results and effectivly saying that this was an isolated event. however i can either surrender the license or keep it and still undergo a review. they say if i surrender it i could drive under section 88 of the road traffic act 1988 if i am in improved health now whilst they decide on whether i am fit enough to drive? well to be fair i was i perfect health very soon after the seizure with no lasting damage at all and good blood sugar control.
what id like to know is what happens now am i going to have to wait forever to get back on the road or given my clean bill of health could it be just a few letters to the dvla and my license validated to drive again.?
sorry for the essay i welcome any advice or input on this annoying and confusing situation i am in.
