This is a wonderful diabetic support group.

However the one thing that you can't do is meet real people in real life (like the pub or a cafe or coffee shop) and sit down and chat and support each other.

I am involved in some diabetes stuff with Diabetes Voices and other patient representative stuff with Diabetes UK but I am totally unaware of any diabetics who are in my local geographical area.

It strikes me that along with the wonderful support for newly diagnosed diabetics on this forum, some simple day to day support from the local community could help people through that difficult first six months post diagnosis.

So what does the forum think?

Is there mileage in setting up contact points in local areas where someone can meet a real person to talk over their problems?

Or is online the way to go?

Diabetes.org.uk has lists of local support groups, you enter your postcode and it will give you the nearest

Yeah - however my nearest one is ...

....well, blow me, a group has just appeared near me despite there not being one for years.

I have emailed to get contact details.

Previously I got details of places like Thanet, only 40 miles away, as the crow flies.
However it is on the wrong side of the Thames estuary so in reality at least two hours each way.

Back to the original question - is a local face to face support group something that forum members think would be a good thing?
