Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes over a year ago but have changed nothing. Everytime I go to my Dr, she says I am fine and doesnt really give me advice or tell me what to do & to be truthful, I probably havent taken much notice but now it is finally sinking in, that I am diabetic.

I have had diabetes insipidous from a head injury since the age of 13 in 1981 which means that I can not control how much I drink & wee. It took a year or 2 for drs to diagnose me, before getting any medication for it. I would drink pints of cold fluid straight down & go to the loo, literally every 5 - 10 mins, day and night & even wet the bed. I was originally put on a nasal spray which helped but wasnt perfect. In 1983, I had been drinking and weeing so much, that I overworked my kidneys & got inflammation of the kidneys & a touch of 6 other illnesses due to my immune system closing down & ended up in hospital for about 2 weeks. After about 10 years, my medication was changed to oral tablets which seemed a lot better apart from at night. At night I would wake up about every 2 hours for a wee. My body clock seemed to accept this and I got used to it. I had been like this for years until about a year and a half to two years ago, when I was eventually diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. At about the same time, I was also diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Since being diagnosed with the latter 2, I have been going to bed, then waking up about every half an hour, and am now finding it very hard to carry on with a normal lifestyle as I am so tired all the time. I can fall asleep at anytime during the day & theres no stopping it. I have started to hallucinate and also wake up somewhere else in my home. Sometimes, whilst on or standing over the loo I could fall asleep & collapse, I have also started to fall out of bed fairly regular too. I often bang my head on walls & the floor when I collapse. Now, I have no life & pretty much stay at home 24/7, I am losing interest in everything. Others dont seem to understand how I am & just think that I am being lazy but I hate being like this so lately, I have been reading about diabetes & it looks like this could be down to my diet so its now time to make changes. Please advise on what I should eat & drink to lower my blood sugars as it looks like high blood sugars are what makes me keep weeing at night. I really want to get back into a sleeping routing.

Thanks for any help. Its really appreciated. I also dont know any of sugar levels etc as I only get it done by the Dr once a year.

First I have to say I'm not a doctor and I'm newly diagnosed myself (about two weeks). I was diagnosed as type 2 and to eat only protein and vegetables and no fruit. I was put on metformin, 1000 units twice a day.

It sounds like you did not get any guidance from your doctor. I have to say I did not either except the broad statement of protein and veggies.

My advice would be to get a blood glucose meter and find out what your blood sugar is at. If it is high, eliminate high carbs like pasta, bread, potatoes and check out the glycemic index. Second, I would get a second opinion from a doctor regarding your diabetes.

With all of those symptoms I would re visit your gp and ask to be referred to a specialist endocrinologist who specialises in immune disorders. You really can't carry on like that. You r entitled to do this but may take while, but think out would be worth it. They do more tests and are more thorough than the standard gp ones.

Hi

Welcome. I agree that your symptoms sound like another visit to the doctor is in order.

However you can still make changes while your are waiting. I am guess for your username of jabba that you may have some excess weight to lose?

I joined this group about 7 weeks ago. I started to lose weight, exercise and cut down on carbohydrates and I began to feel slightly better with a couple of weeks. I continue to improve and have lost more weight. I still have more to go. However I can say it is worth the effort! Really worth the effort!

You can but your own blood sugar meter and tests strips quite cheaply and measure your own sugar levels, keep a food diary and test then you can see what happens. There are lots of people here who will help and support you. Start today!
