Six days after diagnosis and taking one metformin a day for those six days I awoke this morning feeling almost human, a feeling that I have not had since March 2012.

For the first time in a long time I had not woken with a raging thirst; nor had I to get up during the night to refill my pint glass with water, not even once. Further, my swollen ankles and feet are far less swollen today; I can actually see my ankle bones! Today I have energy for the first time in a very long time. Even my hands, which have looked puffy and swollen for at least five years, look almost normal today.

I have just realised that I didn’t even have pins and needles in my hands or feet today either . . . what an incredible difference these little pills are making . . .

I just need to get to grips with good veggie choices for diabetics and hopefully lose the weight that I have gained during the last six months. I will keep returning here for good advice from the community . . .

Hi Cath99
Thank you, and well done on your weight loss :-)
I think I have a lot to learn but I'm sure it will be an interesting journey :-)

Oh how sound like me :) started on Metformin 2 days ago........................tummy cramps bad, lot of loo time lol. Was it like this for u at the start? I am only on 1 a day, but tomorrow its up to 2, I am worried I will get worse tummy probs !!

Hi Sandy-j, Sorry to hear about your tummy probs, hope it's not got worse on a higher dosage. I had a few gurgly tummy days initially but that was all, certainly no pains or additional loo time! I am following the Bucks NHS Trust dosage recommendations of one Metformin after dinner for the first two weeks, increasing to two per day, morning and evening, for the next fortnight, with similar increases over the next four weeks, if my tummy could take it!! It was impressed on me that it is very important to always take them after food. I am still on the one-per-day currently but will increase to two on Thursday. Take care :-)

normal met is one penny cheaper, we co-pay here and I was given slow release first off
Interesting! Perhaps I should ask for SR next time as our UK prescription charges have just increased so my initial prescription for 2 packs of Metformin (56 tabs) cost 8.05 GBP! I think I'll try to get more of them per prescription too ;-)

Are you in England? Why are you paying for your prescriptions? Diabetics get free prescriptions. You need to ask for an exemption form from your surgery.

Thank you Bluetit1802 :)
Yes, I am in England but neither the doc nor the pharmacist mentioned this; I will call in to the surgery to request one. Is it just prescriptions for just the diabetes meds that are free or does the exemption cover other meds too?

It's for all other prescription meds too. My pharmacist did an exemption form for me when I started taking metformin
