Hi all, I'm 43 years old and have just been diagnosed as having type 2 today, really gutted, I have to go for more tests on Monday HBA1, cholestorol etc? I am about 3-4 stone overweight, I know this does not help, so that is one thing I definately have to do, have been trying to lose weight for a while but not very successfully.

Really scared as my dad is a type 2, he has lost both his legs and I'm terrified the same will happen to me, the doctor was really nice, and said she didn't want to overload me with info today, she said she is going to refer me to the hospital for an information class or something like that?

If anyone has any information that could help me I would really appreciate it, you all seem a friendly and helpful group. Not sure if I have done this correct as I've never posted anything before.

Thanks in advance

Julie

Hi Julie
Welcome to the Forum. Take your time, there is a lot to take in but it will get easier once you know a few basics. Here is the information that Sue and I post regularly to newly diagnosed Diabetic's. It should help you.........

Some more advice from us both..........

Questions to ask at A Diabetes Clinic.

Hope all this helps.

Thanks for all the info, I have just printed off the set of questions as I know when I get in there I will go blank, when I was told today I was kind of expecting it as I have had 2 blood tests both highish, the last one was 8.8 fasting? After I was told I burst into tears, daft eh!

Anyway thanks for your help, its somewhere to start from, its all very scary. Lots to read and learn.

Take care

Julie

Julie.
No it's not daft to burst into tears.......a natural reaction. We can help and support.

One thing I must warn you is that the information we give is sometimes viewed with suspicion by some HCP's....they think it means you are going to low carb......if you wish to that is your choice, however what Sue and I advise is to find out what will work for you. It probably will contain a certain amount of reduction in carbohydrates.....how much is also a matter for you.

Just so you know, we have moved this Topic to the Greetings and Introductions section to avoid any duplication and let other new members read.

Hope everything goes well for you, it is a bit of a lifestyle change you will have to get used to. It's not so bad though........I've been a Diabetic for nearly 14 yrs and never felt better, fitter or healthier !

Hi Julie and welcome to the forum. You are right we are all friendly here and all have something in common. If you eat well, lose some weight and keep your levels nice and low you can help to avoid complications. If you need to know anything just ask and someone will be able to help. Good luck with your tests and let us know how you get on.

Hi Julie
Just wanted to say that you are not alone. It is such a daunting time when you first get diagnosed and all sorts of things start to go through your head. I was diagnosed on October 7th this year and all I can say is thank goodness for this forum! They are amazing people who can give great advice and always make you feel part of the big diabetic family. I am learning on a daily basis thanks to all the wonderful advice here. Also don't feel bad about bursting into tears. Its the most natural reaction to what really is a complete and utter change of lifestyle. But you can turn that change into something really positive. The support here will see you through even the toughest of times I promise! There is always someone with the answer to a question. What I can say to you is get a blood monitor and find out what gives you high readings and what keeps you on an even keel. This has been a revelation to me and has also managed to get me about a stone lighter which I have struggled with for years. Please remember that it is a huge learning curve with good days and bad days but this is the best forum to keep you motivated, get help and have loads of lovely people who are in the same place as yourself. Oh and welcome to the forum!!!!

Gill

Cugila, Daisy1 and Gill, thankyou so much for your replies and advice, lots to take in and learn, I don't feel quite so alone now, also knowing I can come on here and ask questions is quite a relief.

Gill I will definately get a blood monitor and see what makes my blood high/low etc, does it matter what type you buy? wow you have lost a stone since you were diagnosed, thats really good, I believe the doc wants me to start by diet to start off with, hopefully this will work and also I may be able to lose some of this weight I am carrying.

Thanks again, such a big help.

Julie

It doesn't matter which type of blood test meter you buy, just choose one you like. Some are smaller than others and they have different finger prickers (though you can use a different finger pricker to the one that comes with the meter of course) and test strips. if you want to do some research you can look on the manufacturer's websites, but it's just personal preference really.

I prefer the accu-check finger prickers because the lancets come in drums of 6 so you don't have to fiddle around changing them each time and the points are not exposed so no risk of stabbing yourself when you don't mean to. If you are going to have to buy the strips you might like to look to see what the cheapest strips you can get are.

hya julie,
welcome to the forum

Hi HLW, thanks for the advice, I have looked at monitors and think I may go for the accu-chek one, going to wait and see what my doc says when I see her on Monday first though.

Amanda thanks for the welcome, this board will definately be helpful in the coming months.

hi Pinklady680 i was diagnosed about a week ago with type 2 also with a fasting bg of 7.9 so far just by changeing what i eat and the amount i have manged to get it down to 6.2 to 6.4 with the help of self testing. we are all here to help

Thats really good, fingers crossed mine goes down like yours, I've been told to follow a healthy diet by the doc, but noticed a lot of people talking about low carb diets etc, as yet the doc hasn't said anything about carbs etc, will find out more on Monday.

Julie

Well went to the doctors today, has a blood for the HBa1 test, cholestorol etc, I have to go back for the results on Thursday, but she did want me to book a double appointment so she could have longer to chat, I did ask for testing strips and was told they don't normally give them for type 2 who are diet or tablet controlled, I explained that I wanted them as I wanted to see what gave me high/low readings, she was then happy to give me them, not sure how long it will last, we'll have to see. My fasting bg this morning was 8.8, not too good was it?

I have also been referred to see a diabetic nurse at the hospital, I have to wait for them to contact me about dates etc, believe this is also for the course you go on.

Hi Julie.
All looks good so far......a bit of gentle persuasion and reasoned argument can go a long way !

As for the fasting Bg.......OK, it's high'ish .....however, it's early days yet. Stick with us and I'm sure things as they say.......can only get better.

Will definately be sticking with you, this board is invaluable and gives such great advice, makes it seem not as scary now!!
