Hi there,

Just been diagnosed with pre diabetes with a Hba1c 44, keep getting symptoms of pins and needles with a burning sensation and also getting nausea which is random and comes and goes.

Any advice would be appreciated

Hello and welcome @ok1982

While it may not seem like it- getting the diagnosis before being diagnosed with diabetes allows you to make changes earlier and ay mean that you never actually become a diabetic.

My first recommendation is to get a meter. That will let you know how your body reacts to different amounts of and types of carbs. As you are not a diabetic I suspect that your body will tolerate a higher amount of carbs than most people here. Having said that- for me (an al or nothing person) it can be easier to go very low carb rather than a higher level- my cravings reduce the lower my carb intake. But everyone is different.

Having got a meter- test your levels before and after a few meals just to get an indication of how your body copes with the carbs in the meals. That will allow you to make choices about your diet to reduce your HbA1C and hopefully move back into the normal range :)

Good luck and welcome.

Thanks, im looking into getting a metre.

my dad had type 2 diabetes as well, so I know that it’s in the genes.

I'm trying to come to terms with the pre diabetes diagnosis.

I'm going to find it hard but I'll get there as I have a very sedantry job (at a desk), my job involves working from home and occasionally I have to travel to other offices for training etc so have to stay in hotel so not in full control of what I can eat.

As daft as it sounds, a diagnosis of prediabetes is actually a good thing. You have a marvellous opportunity to avoid type 2 altogether. I had symptoms similar to yours for about 4 years prior to a prediabetes diagnosis. Doctors showed no interest at all. They all disappeared after low carbing and reducing my blood sugar levels.

Hotels are so much easier because you are saved any temptation of eating "things" in your own home that are not good for diabetics. Use the hotel willpower and give yours a rest. Just order meat, fish or whatever protein source you prefer, with a green salad and olive oil or no dressing. Don't expect hotel staff to know what's suitable, but be precise on your reasons for asking and what you need. Getting hotel staff on board is a breeze, and don't forget extra help = extra tip! If you discreetly tip at the start of your stay, it's better in co-operation terms than waiting until you leave. It doesn't have to be all that much as long as your thanks are sincere.

Welcome to the forum
You are always in control of what you eat, the choice of what goes into your mouth is yours.
I have always found hotels very accommodating, you just have to learn what are the main things you need to avoid and ask for alternatives, no cereal or toast for breakfast and an extra egg or bacon, instead of chips with your steak have a salad or buttered veg.
Your future is in your hands, a few not too onerous changes to your diet now and you have a really good chance of never crossing the line into diabetes
