Hello,
I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 and yesterday started taking diabetes medication ("Xigduo", 5mg dapagliflozin + 850mg metformin), 1 pill with lunch.
This afternoon I fell asleep after lunch and when I woke up I was feeling a bit dizzy, blurred vision and my body felt very heavy to the point I had to sit down. I checked by blood sugar and it was 99 mg/dL (5.5 mmol/L). I then ate a small slice of bread with a very thin layer of strawberry jam and 1/4 apple and the symptoms faded away.
If it helps these were my blood sugar levels today:
Fastening: 105 mg/dL (5.8 mmol/L)
~2h after breakfast: 153 mg/dL (8.5 mmol/L)
Before lunch: 111 mg/dL (6.2 mmol/L)
~2h after lunch: 123 mg/dL (6.8 mmol/L)
A few minutes ago when I felt dizzy: 99 mg/dL (5.5 mmol/L)
I had greek yogurt with 1/2 banana for breakfast and grilled fish with vegetables and 1/4 apple for lunch.
Do you have any idea of what might have happened? Theoretically 99 mg/dL (5.5 mmol/L) is good, right?
Thanks.

You have possibly experienced what is called a false hypo. When our body's have been running high for a while then a fairly normal reading can fool the body into thinking/acting as though it's low and sends it into a bit of a panic.

Or..... it could be that after your higher carb snack which brought you around a bit was a little body carb craving which can happen when there is a sudden lowering of carbs in the diet.

Or... it was just one of those things that everyone gets from time to time.

99 is fine - but your body is probably used to higher levels so it was protesting about it. By eating that amount of carbs you probably pushed your BG level up rather a lot - when I had the same reaction I ate three grapes.....

Hi, thanks for your replies.

Could it also have been a drop in blood pressure due to dapagliflozin which has diuretic effects? I’ve been going to the bathroom a lot more since I started taking the med. Wondering if anyone else taking this med has experienced this. It’s a fairly recent drug though.

By eating that amount of carbs you probably pushed your BG level up rather a lot - when I had the same reaction I ate three grapes.....

I ate that at about 5pm and before dinner at 8pm I had 125 mg/dL (6.9 mmol/L), so as you said it probably pushed my BG level a lot.
