Hi
i have been ok-ish with my testing...still cant seem to reach below 8.5 in the afternoon :(
but i'll keep trying....anyway... last night because i had been in a rush i bought a quorn cottage pit to shove in the oven...low fat etc very little potatoe on it, test before i ate was 7.2 2 hours after 11.2!!! i nearly feel through the floor!! i mean it was QUORN and not very much to the meal to start with..

i must admit i fell alseep shortly after, and this morning i woke up very groggy and tingly senses all over if that makes sense? could this have been because of the high numbers?
i tested and it was 6.8

would be great to get your thoughts please
thanx

You can only check the ingredients. My guess is that the sauce was loaded with sugar (glucose syrup, maybe?).

You're better off making your own Cottage Pie with Mince, veggies and some gravy. Use mashed Cauli, swede, celerriac or sweet potatoe (or a combination) for the topping. Make a few and freeze 'em for your own ready-meals.

Will have much less effect on your BG than any frozen (processed) cottage pie.

thanx Patch, i will do in future, it wasnt that nice either lol.

would that have had the effect on me this morning? do you think

Could be - I don't know. I imagine there were additives in th epotatoe topping (starch, milk protein, etc..) none of it good stuff. May well have made you feel groggy.

Big question is - will you be buying Quorn Cottage Pie again?

Roxy, I definitely know about it the next morning if I've had a blow out the night before. It's a good idea to get into the way of looking at the carb content of the thing you're eating on the label. That will tell you g of carb per 100g and g of carb per serving (with serving size)

http://www.quorn.co.uk/products/Cottage_Pie.aspx

A Quorn ready meal cottage pie would have 33g in a pack. I tend to find that anything over 25 g in an evening meal has a carb hangover effect the next day so the pie would have made me feel rubbish too. In a way the fact that you felt physically bad afterwards is a good thing; it'll make it a lot easier for you to choose options that don't have this effect.

Don't despair that the option you chose because it was 'healthy' turned out to be sub optimal, you'll check next time and it'll become second nature to base your choices on what you read. Generally Quorn is a healthy thing for diabetics, and if you made your own cottage pie with Quorn mince and a celeriac or cauliflower mash it would be excellent for you.

Chin up :D

As a veggie I eat quorn a lot, but I never use their ready prepared meals as you have found out they are WAY to carbiferous.

I make my own meals using the quorn mince, but even things like their sausages have to be watched, they used to have a 3gm of carb each now they have 5gm each, and maybe more depending on the type of saugage - plain. linconshire etc.

thanx so much for the info..when you read carb per 100g do you not read the part that says of which is saturates and sugar?...is just the carbs bit?, thanx again..

oooh i love quorn sausages...not any for ages though x

I look at total carbs not sugars.

Saturates is to do with fats, diabetics are more prone to heart disease and we are recommended to take extra care over limiting the amount of saturated fat in our diet.

I know it seems like a lot to take on board but you'll get there, be reading labels like an old hand before you know it :D
